The sun had completely fallen passed the horizon and only a quarter moon hung very low above the agitated sea. Your crew was stationed on deck waiting for the approaching vessel with murderous excitement. You weren't quite as excited, though through the last few months that you'd been with this crew you had killed a few people and injured more, there was still part of you that felt a little guilty.
"Prepare to board!" your captain ordered as the enemy ship neared.
"Stay close." you felt Killer's presence behind you as his blades appeared in your periphery.
This time he wasn't going to let you out of his sight.
You still didn't know who you were up against. The unmarked ship advanced quickly. It was clear by their direction and speed that they intended to attack, yet not a soul could be spotted on the lightless deck.
"Something feels off." Heat murmured to the first mate.
Before the blond could react, Kai's voice called out from the crow's nest, "Hold steady! They're gonna ram us!"
His announcement was punctuated with groaning timbers starboard as the other ship scraped against yours. The quakes the friction caused on deck sent you back into Killer's chest.
He quickly righted you, "Ready?"
You nodded abruptly unsheathing your cutlass.
"Go!" Kid shouted eliciting a roar from the men of your crew.
Before you knew it you were snatched up in familiar arms and flying over the small gap between the ship's gunwales. Once landing Killer placed you back on your feet. You squinted trying to let your eyes adjust to the darkness that enveloped this ship.
Your crew stood a little bewildered by the silence and lack of light; until of course, your captain landed loudly a few steps from you.
"If you assholes think this crew is afraid of the dark," he sneered turning toward the bluette standing beside him, "Heat."
Heat stepped forward opening his mouth wide and released flames immediately lighting up the cabin and bits of the deck.
"Work quickly boys." the captain ordered.
That was when the ships mystery crew finally made an appearance. Huge figures with glowing purple eyes and ashen skin. They stumbled out wincing with weapons drawn.
"Cap'in!" one of them shouted shielding himself from Heat's flames.
"Water! Water! Water!" they all began to creepily chant.
"What are you waiting for?" Kid howled, "Kill these fucking weirdos!"
With that, the Kid Pirates charged, even as the enemy crew continued to almost sing for water.
There was something familiar about them. You swore you'd seen beings like this before. It finally clicked as Killer came in contact with one of the men. The two of you were the furthest from the light of the flames when Killer's blades made contact with bare skin it screeched as if metal were rubbing metal.
This wasn't going to work, and you couldn't communicate.
You read once of a race of people from the North Blue that lived on an island of eternal darkness. Their deep charcoal flesh matched the landscape of their native land, and their glowing purple eyes allowed them to see in the darkest space. They definitely had the advantage here especially as their captain appeared unhinging his jaw and regurgitating seawater over the flames. You had to do something as many of your mates were meeting the same complication as Killer.
The man Killer had engaged was deflecting every blow with his bare forearm. This fight would last forever unless you intervened. Ignoring the burning pain in your left leg and chest you ran and leaped onto the back of the nocturnal man.
"F/N!" Killer called in surprise, watching you claw your way up to the man's shoulder, "What the hell?"
Of course, the blond was confused, you preferred to keep your opponents at a distance that's why you hated the cutlass so much. Now he stood almost in utter shock watching you wrap your legs around the man's upper arm to secure yourself as he began to flail. Before he could reach you with his opposite hand you flattened yourself across his shoulder looping your arms around his neck and pressed your lips to his ear.
Your voice just below a whisper, you began to sing, "Will you tell me what you saw, and I'll tell you what you missed,
When the ocean met the sky.
You missed when time and life shook hands and said goodbye.
When the earth folded in -"
His body convulsed beneath you while blood trickled down his neck - a small pop ending your song.
Killer stood still and watched the melodic rumble that was your whispering voice destroy the brain of the man you'd latched onto. It only took a few seconds to induce a seizure, rivulets of blood streaming from his wide terrified eyes.
You always looked so sweet and innocent it was easy to forget the gravity of your power. Once the body dropped to the deck you stood wiping his blood spatter from your face. Killer shook his head trying to rid himself of the ringing your voice caused. Even at barely a whisper, the ship shook and anyone near felt a searing pain in their head. That poor bastard definitely had a painful death. You quickly stepped toward him flipping open your notepad to scribble a message.
"Light = weakness."
Killer nodded curtly and shouted for Heat who was just tossing opponents overboard. With a few quick strides, he was in front of you.
"Take Kai back to the ship and gather lanterns and torches." he ordered, "Being exposed to light makes them weak."
Heat nodded quietly and spun around snatching Kai up before jumping off the ship.
"What. The. FUCK!?" your captain's voice raged across the deck as he throttled someone and smashed him into the splintering timbers at his feet.
"What are they made out of?" another crewmate shouted.
All the men that were tossed into the sea quickly made their way back on deck.
A grueling five-ten minutes later Heat and Kai to returned with their arms full. Heat lit a torch and began lighting all of the lanterns while you and Kai picked them up and ran them to your crew members.
"The fuck is this for?" Kid sneered as you approached offering the light.
Before you had time to sigh and roll your eyes at him glowing eyes caught your attention to Kid's left. You fluidly lifted the lantern making him hiss, as his skin flashed a bright red you drew a dagger and flipped it into the base of his throat. As his gurgling body dropped your captain's vermillion glare met yours.
"I'm not saying thank you." he roughly snatched the light from you.
