I had to walk home from school today. Nova was catching a ride with one of her boy toys and I had no on else to rely on. The walk home was rather interesting, listening to all the sounds of nature was honestly quite soothing. I walked upstairs to my apartment and saw my front door wide open. I ran in and my eyes scanned the nearby counter. There was a note where I had laid my U.S. History book this morning, that read:
I know who you are. I know you will be hanging out with Destery Wyatt tonight at Tee's. Be careful. He is trouble. I will be watching you.
A sense of wonder mixed with curiosity, coupled with horror, stirred within me. Who would have broken into my house just to leave me a little note, telling me to be careful with Destery? I locked the front door and looked around the house to see if any trace of the intruder would be in here. I stalked into my bedroom and on my dresser sat a black feather, too big to be a bird's feather. It was as long as my wrist to my elbow. I twirled it around in my hands and apprehended a slight breeze. My window was open. The person who broke in, jumped through the window to escape. I shut the window and placed the feather in a medium-sized box painted with Japanese designs that I got from Japan for my sophomore year of high school.
Later that night, I had a harder time focusing on what happened when I returned home from school and was full of paranoia. I was trying to think who would have done this. There was something mundane and odd going on. It must have really gotten to me because the next thing I knew, I was jumping at the smallest of noises.
I heard a hard, firm knock on the door. I took the steps one by one, stood right in front of the door, slowly opened it, and to my surprise, I saw Destery standing there. He was leaning against the door frame, gazing into my eyes.
"What are you doing in your pajamas, darling? We have to go to Tee's, remember?"
I made plans tonight! I totally forgot! How am I supposed to tell Destery that I forgot? I looked down at my pajamas and smiled sheepishly at him. He let himself in and made himself at home by plopping down on the chair, turning the television on, and kicking his feet up on the coffee table.
"Go and get ready. I'll wait for you." He sounded a little frustrated, like something happened before he got here.
I immediately remembered the note. He might know whose handwriting this was. I scooped up the note and handed it to him. He gave me a look and I explained how someone broke into my house to give me the note, and then exited through the window of my bedroom. I mentioned nothing about the feather I found. I knew I was being paranoid about everything that happened. It was probably just a prank Nova pulled because she thought there was something going on between Destery and I. But, when I asked Destery about the note, he shook his head and returned his attention back to the television.
"I'll be right back. I'll only be five minutes." I said wearily.
I stumbled as I ran upstairs, went into my room and closed the door. I slid off my pajamas and looked around for clothing I usually didn't wear. There were no clothes that looked out of the ordinary. I usually looked casual, but he was dressed like he was going to a club. I might as well dress like that also. I walked around the room and was standing right in front of the door when Destery walked in. Without a shred of embarrassment for walking in on me, he said, "Do you have some food I could eat? I didn't have dinner yet. Oh, and nice panties."
I looked at him with fury, covering up my body quickly. "Are you delusional? I was getting changed and you came in here to ask me if I had any food? Get out of my room!" I screeched, my face red from him seeing me.
