#1: The Differences of an Author and a Writer

Based on the part title, ano nga ba ang pagkakaiba ng author at writer? Pareho lang ba talaga sila, or is there something MORE behind the meanings ng mga salitang yan?

One simple logic can justify the underlying ideas:

HINDI LAHAT ng WRITER ay AUTHOR

Paano nangyari iyon? Let us first define the two. For easier references, si pareng wikipedia nalang ang kinonsulta ko.

"An author is broadly defined as "the person who originated or gave existence to anything" and whose authorship determines responsibility for what was created. Narrowly defined, an author is the originator of any written work and can also be described as a writer."

Kung papansinin niyo, kapag sinabi mong isa kang 'author', you have to OWN and ORIGINATE things. Ibig sabihin, ikaw ang gumawa non, hindi ibang tao. Original work. sayo nanggaling, at ikaw ang sumulat.

While the other one, kapag sinabi mong 'writer' ka, you only need to use written words. Anything you write to communicate ideas sa iba't ibang paraan at iba't ibang purpose. Basta may isinulat ka at nabasa ng iba, writer ka na. Pero hindi ka palaging author, dahil hindi lahat ng isusulat mo ay original.

Still not clear? Here's a broader explanation.

Once you are an author of a book, you have it's intellectual copyright. Well basically, lahat naman ng isusulat ng isang tao, as long as wala kang direct reference from anything, nasayo ang copyright niyan. Intellectual copyright, meaning ikaw ang nakaisip non. Kaya dapat lang na ikaw ang reference whevener someone else uses something you wrote. Author ka. Kung sa inventions ba, nasayo ang patent. Hindi pwedeng pakialaman o baguhin ng ibang tao ng walang permiso mo.

Then if you are a writer, sabi ko nga, pwede kang maging author, pero hindi lahat ng writer ay author. Dahil ang lahat ng taong nagsusulat, writer yon. Yun nga lang, marami kasing uri ng writer.

Ang iba't ibang uri ng writer ay:

1) Poet - very simply, isang taong sumusulat ng mga tula. They are writers, too. At isa silang uri ng author. You see, writer na sila, author pa, and to distinguish them from other kinds, they are poets. Tula ang isinusulat. Period

2) Novelist - very applicable sa wattpad. Dahil lahat ng nandito, lahat ng 'author' at 'writers' na narito, novelists. Ano pa ba ang itatawag mo sa stories nila? Those are novels, of course. Hindi lang yung mga tula talaga and one-shots. Pero kahit yung mga fan-fiction works, novels yan, for as long as mahaba yan.

3) Satirist - maraming uri ng satirists dito sa wattpad. Yes, meron niyan dito. They are writers and authors as well. And a satirist is a novelist, too. Want me to give one good example? Have you read MHIAMB or the very popular, My Husband Is A Mafia Boss? It's a satirical romantic-comedy novel. Actually, marami pa siyang kinabibilangang genres, but generally, it is a satirical novel.

Ano nga ba ang isang satirical novel? Inside it, there's one word you would always say: 'ridiculously good'. Overacting. Sarcastic. Ironic. Please do not be offended if you're a fan of the author, dahil ako mismo, fan din ako ng author at ng story. What I mean by 'overacting'.. is Aemie. She's incredibly nai've and dense, tama, hindi ba? But you wouldn't use the word 'stupid' to describe her. Bakit? Because she's EFFECTIVELY FUNNY. And there it is. The satire. Bakit ba effective magpatawa ang characteristic niya? Because she's TOO DENSE. Sobra. Sabi ko nga, overacting, yet still funny. That's the idea of satire.

4) Librettist - sila ang sumusulat ng mga scripts for opera works. So far wala akong nakitang ganyan dito sa wattpad so hindi ko na masyadong i-didiscuss. They are authors, dahil lahat ng gawa nila ay original.

5) Lyricist - as the word implies, they write lyrics. They are writers. Songwriters. Authors.

6) Playwright - they can be novelists, pero pwede ring hindi. Pwedeng ang isusulat nila ay gagamitin sa isang play, pero pwede ring hindi. For as long as ang isinusulat nila ay in dialogue formats, playwright writers sila. Sumusulat ng isang novel in a form of dialogues - with the least descriptions ng kung anong meron sa paligid and all that. Parang pag nagrerelay ka ng joke.

7) Screenwriter - writers or authors na specifically designed ang work for screenplays. Soap opera. Yung mga sumusulat ng telenovela at koreanovela. They are screenwriters.

8) Biographer - if you start writing things about life events ng isang partikular na tao, o sa mismong buhay mo, you are already a biographer. You specialize on writing facts. Iyon ang point ng isang biographer - you only write facts. Tunay na nangyari. All biographers lie both as writers and authors.

9) Critic- this one is quite tricky. All critics are NOT authors. They only criticize OTHER PEOPLE'S WORK. Now, let's clear up the word 'critic' first. Hindi porket sinabing critic sila puro paninira ang sasabihin nila. No. They CRITICIZE your work for POSSIBLE ERRORS and for suggestions nila para mas mapabuti ang ginagawa mo. That's what you call CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM. They are not authors, inuulit ko. More likely, reader na writer. Hindi sila author dahil ang kini-criticize nila ay HINDI KANILANG GAWA.

10) Editor - again, these are not AUTHORS, pero writers sila. The word itself explains it all. Editor. Edit. Taga-edit ng gawa ng iba. Hindi kanila, sabi ko nga, ineedit lang. Pinapaganda, iniaayos, tumutulong makagawa ng mas effective na work of literature ng gawa ng iba.

Maraming maraming iba pang uri ng writers, pero hanggang dito nalang ang babanggitin ko dahil hindi na naman applicable for wattpad ang iba. Ang mahalaga, nai-explain ko kahit papaano ang difference between authors and writers.

So kung writer ka at sigurado kang original work ang ginawa mo, AUTHOR ka.

Kung nag-edit ka ng gawa ng iba, WRITER ka.
