Alters are not needed, but many witches choose to have one.
Alters are often religious, but not always.
You can really put anything on your alter, but if it is geared towards a certain deity it is common to add things relevant to that God/dess.
For example, an alter to honor Poseidon might have a jar of sea water, a picture or statue of him, horse shoes or figures, etc.
It doesn't have to be so fancy. An alter to Athena could have a dozen Snapple lids for wisdom. It can be loose symbolism, just use what's on hand.
If you don't have or wish to use a main deity, focus on what you value most in practice. Crystals that have meanings corresponding with your path, bones if you use them, your wand, pincones.Tip For Closeted Witches
Make a portable alter in a box or tin. They can be Altoid tin sized or put in an old-school lunch box.
If found, you can say it's you random/junk/trinket box, as it'll probably be full of crystals and bottle caps and sand and the like. Just don't put bones or specifically witchy items in it if that will get you in trouble.
