We walked somberly that following day, very little talking, no singing, and at a very fast pace. That was the first time in about four weeks that someone in my squad was killed. What made it strange though was that it was not out in a battle, but rather quietly in the night. I knew that the person who killed Maddy is walking with us, or not far off into the wood line. We walked for about thirty minutes before we came up on the county line.
Here is where we would exit Western NC, and go forth to Shelby and beyond. I could see just a little way in front of us and could smell the foul odor. This next leg through the Piedmont might be the toughest one we have to face. We have to go through big cities, cross multiple rivers, and not to mention the actual region is huge and and can take maybe a week to a month to go through. Either way, we had a large group and were ready to accept the challenge now in front of us.
