Chapter 3

I cried as I cradled my best friend’s dead body in my arms. “I am so sorry Evie, so sorry.” I kept muttering. I gently rested her body on the grass and went to pluck flowers for her.

I made sure to get the purple ones only because I always remembered how she would ogle them.

When I brought the flowers to the grass, her body was gone. “Evie?” I screamed. Suddenly a hand was cupped around my mouth and I was yanked back into the trees.

I screamed and fought back.  “Shh! Its just me!” A voice whispered to me.

The hand let go and I turned around. “Evie?” I said, my eyes wide. “Wha… But I… I saw you die!” I whisper-shouted.

Evie was still pale from her “death” but she looked, well, alive!

“Yah, about that. I really need to explain you some things.” Evie said.

We were in her family’s basement and it was three in the morning. Evie was explaining to me what is going on.

“So basically, your family has a long history of hunting. I guess you can say that you guys are monster hunters of things that live in the other dimension. Kol is from the other dimension.

“Where the “monsters” come from. I guess you can say that I am one of them. We aren’t technically monsters though. Our species is known as the Pulchra, which means “the beautiful ones”.

“We were created for a different dimension, a rockier, dark one. It is really hard there. But everyone is given a set of powers that help us survive. And all of us have a really long life span.

“Eventually, the Pulchra found out about humans and they instantly became angry and jealous that humans have such an easy life and get a beautiful dimension to live in. So they started attacking. But not in the normal way.” Evie explained.

“They attacked the children at night didn’t they?” I asked. “Children under the age of 10 who believe in all this monster stuff.”

“Yah.” Evie said. “They wanted the children to be scared, to feel alone. So then they will be scarred.” Evie explained.

“And that’s where you come in.” Evie said. “In 1324, a man started to do research on my kind and found out almost everything about them. It helped that he had a lot of families of Pulchra on his side.” Evie explained.

“He started a small group of hunters that would specifically seek out the trouble-making Pulchra, because not all of them were bad. That man is your ancestor and one of the families that were on his side was my grandmother’s family.”

I nodded. “I still don’t get how you didn’t die though.” I said.

Evie nodded. “Yah, there are only three ways to kill one of the Pulchra. Burning, ripping the heart out, and draining them of their blood.” Evie explained.

“What are your powers?” I asked.

She thought about it for a little before answering. “I didn’t get all of them yet but so far, telekinesis, and teleportation.”

            I nodded.

“The thing that Kol was asking for, the “crystal”, its something that runs in your family. Damn he is such an idiot! What he’s looking for isn’t even a “crystal”! It’s actually a black opal, a lightning black opal. It has something inside it, something that makes it blue and black.

“It holds the purest soul of a Pulchra to ever exist. That is the blue. And that soul combined with the darkest soul of a Pulchra to ever exist all contained in a black opal, has the power to destroy a dimension.”

“So what you are saying is that Kol wants to steal something to destroy mankind?” I asked, slightly afraid.

“Well, he doesn’t know the opal does. He thinks that they want it because it will make their dimension more like Earth. I tried telling him, he didn’t believe me.” Evie explained.

“So then why is he after me?” I asked.

“Because the opal is something that belongs to your family. You will inherit it on your 16th birthday and be the biggest target for them. They will do rash things to get what they want but you CANNOT give up the opal NO MATTER WHAT!” Evie yelled.

Pic of the Opal here. Sorry for the late update.
