The Initiates

Chapter 5

Tris' POV    

     Today, training starts out with the fights. We tell the initiates to be at the pit by 8.

     "The first people who are going to fight is Noah and Kaylee!" Says Four

"But Emily isn't here." Charlie says. "we can't start without her..."

Before I could answer, Emily comes running in with screams of: "I'm sorry!" "I slept in!"

I tell her it's okay as long as it never happens again. she was only 2 minutes late. But, of course, Eric was watching. He storms in, furious. "Do you know how late you were!?"

"2 minutes..." I can tell she's scared.

"Exactly! Do you know the punishment here?"

"Umm. No..?"

"You have 3 options: hang over the chasm for 5 minutes, or die. if you refuse you will be factionless."

All I can think of right now is how Christina almost didn't make it. Emily isn't as strong as Christina... How is she going to make it? The rest of the initiates stand in horror as she climbs over the railing and starts hanging. She hangs with no problem for about 3 minutes. A current comes and her right hand slips. She tries to grab on but she's not strong enough. The next splash of water hits... We've lost our first initiate.

     I don't even have time to think before Charlie breaks down to the ground screaming, "EMILY NOOO!“ I guess they were pretty close. Eric smirks. "Oh, so you're happy about this?" i retort.

"She was late. Carry on with training. I'll be watching."

Before I could say anything else, Tobias steps in to say, "Noah, Kaylee. Step on the mat and prepare to fight."

Sorry I haven't updated. I have finals and a bunch of crazy projects. SCHOOL ENDS IN A WEEK!!!! I'll update a lot more during summer. Sorry guys and thanks for reading!
