It's just a kiss. •
"Maya, what's wrong? You look like the grinch." Riley frowned as the blonde held a scowl on her face.
Maya stared with her eyes narrowed. "You made me come to school in this." She gestured to her Christmas elf attire.
Riley smiled, viewing her from head to toe. "You look cute!"
It was spirit week and of course, Riley had matching costumes planned. Tomorrow was going to be ugly sweater day and god knows what else she had prepared for the both of them.
"Well, well." Lucas approached them with a smirk, eyeing their outfits.
Maya pointed a finger at him. "Don't you dare say anything."
He crossed his arms over his chest, an annoying smile plastered on his face. "I was just going to say that you look adorable." He leaned closer to her face, "Ma'am."
Riley beamed, clapping her hands together. "See, Maya! I told you!" Her smile grew bigger as she adjusted Maya's lopsided hat.
She rolled her eyes. Riley acted like such a mom sometimes. In her peripheral vision, she saw something move above her. Looking up, a mistletoe greeted her, hanging right above her and Lucas.
Maya turned around and Zay had a mischievous grin on his face as he held a stick with a mistletoe dangling on the other end as if it were a fishing rod.
"Zay... What are you doing?" Maya gave him a weird look.
"Dude..." Lucas said.
"What's taking so long? I wanna see some smooching." Zay waved his hand at the two as if cueing them to kiss right there.
"Riley, help." Maya looked at her best friend with pleading eyes.
The brunette just shrugged, obviously finding the whole situation amusing. "Well, go on, kiss him!"
Maya glared at her for not helping at all. She couldn't look at Lucas right now, so she dropped her gaze to the floor.
"Zay, stop this. We're not going to kiss." Lucas declared, flicking the mistletoe.
Maya's heart dropped a little. Did he not want to kiss her?
"It's just a kiss! Come on, a little peck at least." Zay persisted.
"Go find new people to torture." He responded.
Maya frowned. Kissing her was torture to him?
"I'm going to the bathroom." She pushed past her friends and let her feet take her wherever. She just wanted to get out of there.
What was wrong with her? It wasn't like she wanted to kiss him anyway, right? So why did she feel so upset? Maya lightly kicked the wall before sliding down against it. She pouted, feelings were so confusing.
"Hey." She froze when she heard a familiar voice above her.
Maya looked up and Lucas stood there with his hands in his pockets. "Huckleberry," she bowed her head a little.
"Are you... Okay?" He slid down beside her, watching her look at her lap.
Maya nodded, giving him a small grin. "I'm fine."
He furrowed his brows, looking at her in disbelief. "How are you fine, you don't look fine."
She dropped her head, playing with her fingers. "It's stupid, really."
Lucas sighed, clasping his hands together and resting them on his lap. "Enlighten me."
The blonde bit the insides of her cheeks and pondered before breaking the silence that had settled upon them.
"Is the idea of kissing me really that revolting?" Maya kept her eyes on the floor, avoiding any eye contact.
He blinked in confusion. "What?"
"Just the way you reacted, it seemed like you really did not want to kiss me."
When he didn't reply, she shook her head and stood up. "I told you it's stupid."
Before she could walk away, she felt his hand on her wrist. Maya spun around, waiting for him to say something.
His eyes flitted back and forth as if trying to read her expression. "It's not like you wanted to kiss me, right?"
Maya hesitated before nodding her head. "Right."
"That would be weird. Because, you know, we're friends." She was lying through her teeth and she knew it. He knew it.
Lucas slightly narrowed his eyes at her. "Then why do you seem so bothered about it?"
She gulped, shrugging and trying to play it cool. "I'm not."
"You're not?" he slowly stepped towards her.
Maya took a step back, and she grew unsettled as he watched her like a predator stalking it's prey.
"So, you would stop me if I tried to kiss you?" One more step and she would have her back against the wall.
She didn't know what to say, he had an effect on her and the words were caught in her throat. He eyed her cherry lips and she looked at him with wide eyes.
Lucas decided to test his theory and took another step, caging her with each hand pressed against the wall beside her head. He could hear and feel her heavy breathing.
"I'm giving you one more chance to stop this." His lips were only a few inches away from hers and her breath smelled of peppermint and he didn't want her to stop him at all.
She slowly lifted her eyes to his before looking back down at his lips. "Kiss me, Lucas."
So he did, he pressed his chapped lips onto her soft ones. It started slow but as it deepened, their kisses grew desperate and filled with want for more. They held onto each other tightly as their lips moved hungrily against each other's.
They pulled away for air, leaning their foreheads against each other's. The two panted as their eyes locked in an intense staring contest, charged energy lingering in the air.
"I've wanted to do that for so damn long, Maya." He chuckled. "I just didn't want to make out right in front of our friends, you know?"
And for the first time that day, she smiled.
