Although they shared the same circle of close friends, it was safe to say that they fitted into different crowds.

They were both popular and well known.

Lucas, being the football quarterback and the school's heartthrob, hung out with the stereotypical popular crowd; which were the jocks and cheerleaders.

They weren't necessarily at the top of the food chain though. Even the math nerds and band geeks were popular too—in fact, nobody was labelled anymore. They were all just, people.

Maya on the other hand, fitted in with the more artsy crowd. They were the ones who performed for talent shows and starred in school plays, the ones who had their artwork displayed in the glass cases at the foyer.

Despite the (minor) differences, the two had a connection; a connection that had always been there ever since they met in middle school.

They just weren't very public about it. Most of their classmates bragged about their relationships on social media by posting photos with cheesy captions—or they just made out in the hallway by the lockers and everyone would just know.

Their close friends and family knew about them, and that was enough. They didn't need the approval or attention from the people at school. If they wanted to kiss or be intimate, they would save that for when they were alone together in their bedrooms.

It was sometimes an inconvenience that nobody at school knew. Classmates always attempted to set them up for dates when they were already taken.

"Psst."

Maya glanced up from her sketch, her eyes meeting her friend, Brenda's.

"Hmm?" She looked back at her drawing, making short strokes with her pencil.

"So..." Brenda watched the blonde draw, tapping her own pencil against the desk.

Maya waited silently, occupying herself with her sketch.

"So okay, I wasn't supposed to say anything—but, my cousin Jack, you know him." Brenda lowered her voice, as if preparing Maya for what she was about to say.

"Well here it is," Maya saw her smile at the corner of her eye. "He's got a thing for you!" The redhead squealed. "I just think you two would be the perfect match-"

"Brenda," Maya held up her hand. "I'm not interested." She shortly said before returning to her artwork.

The girl frowned, drumming her fingers against the table. "But..."

"No buts, Brenda. I thought we talked about this; no more setting me up!" Maya raised her brows sternly.

"I just don't want you to be alone." She stuck out her bottom lip in a dramatic pout, poking Maya's cheek.

"I'm not alone." She responded, chuckling incredulously.

"You're not?" Brenda perked up, her brows high on her forehead. "Well now you've got to tell me!"
