Grace'POV
Ok... After that disastrous turn of events earlier with Matteo my tests came back normal and the Doctor, Jackson Hunt. I find it strange that he conducted my tests considering he is a paediatric neurosurgeon but I didn't care enough to ask because once he told me, 'you are fine, go to your son. Here.' and he'd handed me his card that had his new number and email and explained that he was here is I ever needed someone to talk to, I left the room. The way that he looked from me and at Matteo and Carlos was pretty funny, it was almost as if he regarded them as childish for arguing over me whilst A. I was in hospital and B. (MOST FREAKING IMPORTANTLY) my son is in hospital. Anyway... needless to say that as soon as he gave me the all clear I got changed at lightening speed and sprinted to Arloe's room.
When I walked into Rebecca, Weaver and Arloe all playing charades together. Currently Becca is the one miming and she is flapping around the hospital room like a chicken. My children are in hysterics and I am happy to see them smiling despite the stress and concern that being in hospital causes them. I feel like I'm drowning under all the stress.
In between fits of laughter Arloe shouts 'flying dinosaur poop!'
They both laugh harder. I smile at their silliness.
Weavers inputs next with 'pink and green chicken with pig feet and poops popcorn'
We are all laughing, even the doctor. I hadn't noticed him when he'd squeezed in past Carlos and Matteo but it is Jackson. He looks at me, and gives me the 'it's time to get serious look' and motions for me to sit with Arloe on his bed. Jackson gently places a hand on his head and smooths back his hair...'Hey dude, how is school?' He asks Arloe smiling.
'It's good... I have lots of friends! My best friend is Dustin... Auntie Becs is his mom and my teacher!' Arloe replies excitedly.
'Well that's brilliant!' Jackson says and looks at me smiling. There was a time we both thought he wouldn't live long enough to see his 2nd Birthday never mind start school. See when Arloe was born he was fine until about 6 months old when he was vomiting, unbalanced and lesser developed than his sister so I took him to the doctor (Jackson) and he ran tests which concluded that Arloe has an inoperable brain tumour. Jackson IS ranked the best paediatric neurosurgeon in the world at this point in time and he explained everything so patiently to me and comprehensively that I decided to go ahead with the surgery when Arloe reached 9 months despite the risks. Arloe was in hospital for a year, with few times out, unless with me or Jackson.
'I'm really sorry little man but you will need to stay here for a couple of weeks, until we fix a little problem in your jelly up here' Jackson points at Arloe's brain area.
'What's wrong with my Jelly?' Arloe asks Jackson.
'Well, you see Arloe, under your hair there is a skull and it is very very hard, like a rock lollipop, and under that is lots of jello' Arloe nods 'it is a very very special and important pink jello that needs to be looked after very very carefully' Jackson tells Arloe. Jackson is so good with kids and it warms my heart, even though he is a doctor that is fluent in medical jargon he is able to simplify everything so that his patients sort of understand what is happening to them.
'Why is my Jello different to yours? And mamma's and Weav's?' Tears pool in my eyes and it takes everything in me to hold them in.
'Because Arloe, everybody is different, some differences are good and others are not-so-good. Nearly all of your jello is like mine, your mothers and your sisters but there is a little bit that is not so good, soon that little bit will be all gone because me and you are a superheroes and superhero's always win no matter what!Ok?'
Everybody in the room is silent and we just here a happy 'ok!' From Arloe who goes back to playing Charades with his sister.
Jackson walks over to me and places an arm on my shoulder and says, 'come outside, the nurses said we need to talk'
I get up and follow him out of Arloe's room. Matteo follows me and Jackson from the room. We all stand in the corridor, close enough to hear Arloe and Weaver's laughter but far enough away so that Arloe doesn't here.
Jackson begins 'what I told Arloe is not a lie but only half true. The tumour that I removed last time has grown back, only this time it isn't as bad because it isn't wrapped around the main blood supply to his brain. However it is twice the size and I run the risk of damaging the area of his brain that holds memories, the ability to understand, languages...'
I'be heard this all once before and I hoped that would be the first and the last time but here I am. I break down and cry. Jackson wraps his arms around me and pulls me into a hug.
When I turn to see if Matteo understood... he's gone.
But where?
