In the very beginning of morning Kaniss woke the humans up, put the pillows and blankets away and led them off.
Xavier could've sworn he could see Glacie's unearthly glare fixed upon him as if he wanted to kill him.
Harvard was fiddling with his sweater sleeves when Kaniss suddenly came to a sharp halt.
Nicole looked around Kaniss and squinted.
A large dog-like creature was laying on the dusty path, bleeding out and dying.
Xavier gasped softly at the sight, "Should we help it?" he looked at the Karag.
Kaniss shook his head, "It's no use, it'll be dead soon. Let's just continue. I have a friend close by who can give us something to eat, Xyrfia Durgis." he smiled a little bit.
Nicole smiled as well, Kaniss really seemed happier than when they first met him.
Kaniss led them to a mountain of deep red stone, hardly any trees were growing but plenty of bushes peppered with colorful berries sprouted everywhere.
"Come on, she lives in a cave up there, not too high though." Kaniss said reassuringly as he began walking up a set of stairs that seemed to be carved into the red stone. The four humans followed, they all got hungrier and hungrier by the minute.
Once they made it to the cave Kaniss stopped them, in a soft voice he told them, "Now I should tell you, Xyrfia is, how can I say this, very abnormal. She doesn't hate humans, but she does hate humans that incredibly rude so mind your manners, as your earth folk would say."
The teenagers shot a glare towards Harvard who shrugged.
Kaniss tapped a rock on the side of the cave and they could hear footsteps approach. A small female Karag with long silvery hair appeared in the cave entrance.
She stuck her hands in her blue vest pockets and smiled, showing off her crooked teeth and sharp fangs, she also was wearing gray shorts and black sneakers with yellow laces.
"Ah, hello Xyrfia," Kaniss greeted her with a smile.
"Does she see many newcomers? Why yes! Ah, do come in pleeeeease!" She said in a high pitched voice as Kaniss took her hand and she pulled him in.
The humans entered the cave and looked around the interior.
Orange paint was splattered on the walls, sometimes creating simplistic images of cats or what looked to be karags or humans.
Jane smiled at the four eyed, large white cat that lay sleeping on a colorful blanket.
"Well, she begins, what brings the humans to my humble abode?" Xyrfia said cheerfully, she seemed to be narrating herself.
Kaniss began to fiddle with his hands, quietly sighing before he began to speak. "Well, these four kids came from the portal, now it's broken. I brought them here because you know how to cook and you like humans. Is that okay?" he looked at her hopefully.
Xyrfia let out a soft chortle and grabbed some paper off the counter. "Yes! Of courrrse it's perfect!" she bounced with joy.
Harvard stared at the paintings on the walls with a daze of confusion.
Xyrfia wasn't the best artist apparently, but she held potential.
Nicole approached the Two karags and looked at the sheet of paper that xyrfia was scribbling on.
She was drawing a sketchy image of four figures in sweaters. It must be them.
Xyrfia then took an orange pencil and wrote 'The Quartet of Newcomers!' on the bottom before taping it to a wall covered in other paper drawings.
Xavier turned his head as he felt someone poking him, it was Harvard.
"Hey Nerd," he chuckled, "Come here, this looks exactly like you!" Xavier rolled his green eyes and followed the ginger to the painted wall, sure enough a figure was crudely drawn into the stone wearing square glasses. It looked a bit like him.
"Um, 'zer-fee-ah'? Is it?" Xavier turned to the small Karag, "Who's this?" he pointed at the drawing. Xyrfia came tromping up in her cat boots and examined the image. "Ah! She has decided it is the great Karag named Poncee! He resides just west of here and is great with Screenwave technology!"
Nicole was looking at the paper drawings taped to the wall in the makeshift kitchen. One drawing caught her eye, it didn't fit in, the art style was a bit cleaner and it pictured a small human with white hair and wearing a green sweater.
Xyrfia definitely didn't draw it.
Once Xyrfia had calmed down she pulled a small bowl of bright blue berries from a cabinet and sat them on the table.
"Here, she says, eat some of these while I cook, she smiles at the humans." Xyrfia narrated.
Kaniss helped Xyrfia gather all the food and cooking utensils as Jane watched them like a cat watching a mouse.
Once they had sat the plates of colorful food on the table the humans looked in awe.
It seemed like karags knew what most human foods were, they had made some fluffy pink pancakes with syrup made from the blue berries.
"Go on and eat, me and Xyrfia need to talk," Kaniss said with an obviously fake smile.
He dragged the smaller Karag out the cave by the back of her jacket.
"What gives? She is very confused at this point. She wishes for answers!" Xyrfia pouted.
"Xyrfia, I need you to know that these humans are not evil, you might understand but the other karags just don't seem to acknowledge that one human gone bad doesn't mean all the humans will follow that same route." Kaniss fumbled nervously with his sweater.
Xyrfia seemed to lose her smile and mirth, her face and voice took on a more serious tone. "She doesn't understand, do you wish her to convince the rest of their innocence? Or would you like her to accompany you upon this journey?" she questioned less jovially.
Kaniss turned his head to the vast field below. "I want you to spread the word, these newcomers are good, they mean no harm, alright?"
Xyrfia gave a small salute and her smile returned.
"I won't disappoint you! She shouted at the top of her lungs!" the Karag hyped, once more she was her joyous and giggly self.
Once they had returned in the cave, the four humans were sitting on the floor with their plates already cleaned off and washed.
Xyrfia smiled, yes they did show potential of being great people.
Once more the humans were led by Kaniss to another unknown location.
Jane decided to pass the time by asking Kaniss questions, Nicole wrote the answers on a piece of paper that Xyrfia had given to her.
Questions like, How hold can a Karag live to?:35 earth years, Why is your hair turning black?:Age, and Where do young karags come from?:The same process as humans, were all asked and answered.
Kaniss had recently been scratching his back a lot, it seemed abnormal and kind of scared Xavier.
When Jane asked about it she got the answer, 'I'm getting my wings soon,' from Kaniss.
