The sudden sound of what sounded like an explosion filled the room, causing the eleven year old girl to sit up abruptly in her bed, dirty blonde hair in a messy side braid. Her breathing was heavy from the rude awakening. She rubbed her eyes lightly before throwing the sheets from her body and walking towards her window. The familiar sight of her hometown, Boston, could be seen in the dark. But something was different, and that was the smoke leaving a flickering orange on what looked like a hospital.

When she turned the latch to inch it open, she listened into the night where faint sirens good be heard, mixed when what sounded like the occasional yell. They yells seemed to turn into screams as she stood listening in shock for God knows how long. She was starting to feel fear, and backed away from the open window before quickly turning and walking out of her room, she headed down the hall to the room at the end and quietly pushed the door open. She was immediately overwhelmed by the smell of aftershave mixed with the faint smell of Chinese that was eaten earlier.

"Rory." she said loudly, shaking the lump under the sheets.

"What the fuck is it, Tay." the familiar voice murmured, still not visible due to his thick cocoon.

Normally, she would have scolded him for swearing at her, but she was too panicked. "Something's wrong. There was an explosion or something, Rory I'm scared. Please get up." the seriousness in her voice caused him to slowly sit up with a concerned, yet still sleepy, expression on his face.

"Wait, what do you mean?" He looked confused.

"Come, look!" She pulled on his hands to get him out of his bed, ignoring his protests about the fact he was only in his boxers. She guided him back into her room and to the still open window, and pointed to the cloud of smoke. There were more screams now, and they were louder. More lights had flickered on around the neighbourhood.

"Shit." Rory breathed, staring and listening. "Shit, shit. We need to check the news. Try and get hold of Mom or Dad. Shit, Dad was working in the hospital. Fuck. Oh my God. What the fuck is happening?"

Tay grabbed her phone from her room, and the pair move downstairs and into the living room while Rory was talking. He'd switched on the TV and was watching with an intense gaze. Tay frantically dialed her Mom's number, but it went straight to voice mall. Next, she tried her Dad's cell, which just rang out. The sight on the news was mainly orange. It was in front of the hospital that Tay had seen, and her hand reached up to cover her mouth. The news reporter was saying something about a virus which infected the brain had reached our city, and that patients in the hospital were going crazy. Somewhere gas had started leaking, hence the explosion. Tay and Rory sat entranced by the screen while the woman went on to tell people to stay in there -

Within seconds the screen turned to panic. The news reporter glanced to her right before screaming as something that looked human (but definitely wasn't) attacked her and the camera fell to the ground. More figures could be seen, sprinting, screaming could be heard.

"Okay, shit, I'm going to go put some clothes on. Stay here, don't move, don't leave the house, do you understand? There's something fucked up going on."

The girl simply nodded, tears started to form on her eyes as her brother left the room to sprint up stairs. He returned a minute later in jeans and a black shirt, slipping into a pair of vans. He opened his mouth to speak until a smashing noise was heard from the kitchen. Rory tensed up and Tay whimpered.

"Stay behind me, okay?" Rory instructed his little sister, if he felt scared he wasn't showing it.

Tay obeyed, stepping behind him and grabbing onto the back of his shirt. He glanced around the room and picked up a baseball bat which lay on the floor next to the TV next to a catchers mitt. The bat was held in a threatening manner as he edged towards the kitchen, Tay following closely behind. Once in the kitchen, Tay noticed on of the sliding glass doors had smashed and a rustling noise could be heard from the other side of the island. Rory gulped and moved to the left to try and see what was there. His eyes narrowed at the crouched figure with familiar blonde hair.

"Mom?"

What looked up was their Mom, but at the same time it wasn't. The thing snarled at his before rising and advancing towards us at a speed faster than walking.

"Mom what the fu - "

Rory tried to process until it seemed to jump towards us, which Rory immediately swung out the bad and hit her - it - straight on the skull. It fell to the side, but stayed active as if it was about to attack again but Rory acted more quickly this time and struck it again, and again. Tay didn't know how many times he bashed it's head, but it was probably much more that necessary. Sobs escaped Tay's lips with every hit until the bat was dropped to the floor and Rory's heavy breathing could be heard. h

"Fuck. Fuck." Rory kept muttering, both of them too frightened to move.

Tay took this moment to observe the creature lying below them. It displayed some features of their mother. Except the skin looked grey, and there was dark circles under her eyes, really dark. She looked ill. Tay's mind drifted to the news reporter had said about the virus that affected your brain. Was that what happened to their Mom? God, their Mom. Rory had just killed their mother - but it really wasn't their mother, was it? It was a monster.
