Nova was starting to regret her decision to help Mr. Smoothe. He had needles in her arms and a tube stuck up her nose. She could feel the toxins in her blood. The way that they made her feel drowsy almost overpowered her. Almost. But they didn't knock her out.
She wished they did.
She saw the blade cut into her skin as they extracted the bone marrow from her shins. She had to remind herself who she was doing this for. If Nova didn't help to develop an antidote, her sister would die, and she would have another death on her hands. She didn't need to think about a small limp body in her arms. She didn't need to think that only Matt and her would be left; the only Cabots. Even that wouldn't be the real truth. She was a different Cabot. She had to remind herself that her family wasn't her family, and that Matt would be the remaining Cabot from the family she had grown up with. She had killed their parents and she would kill Casa if she didn't do this.
So she had to.
She had to let them run tests on her and extract her blood. She had to let them use her as an experiment. Nova was following in her parents footsteps. She didn't seen like a human anymore. The way they referred to her as "specimen", made her loath them even more. Was she not good enough to be called Nova?! Was she really just a "specimen" created to save the world. She'd like to believe that it wasn't true, but it was. She remembered being able to lift more than the boys in her gym class, run faster than the track team's sprinters, and even get healthier quicker. When her parents took her to the doctors, they were never able to find anything wrong with her. Completely healthy. Her life had only been lies. She wasn't mentally healthy and she was a sick of waiting to die.
Nova never complained when the syringe entered her skin. Her sister was always watching her from her crate, so Nova had to keep strong. As it pierced into her, the burning sensation slowly tingled up her arm. She could feel the needle, the pain.
In that moment, Nova wished she was dead.
But she wasn't. Actually, her health had never been better. Her immunity had always been low, but now, it seemed so high that nothing could affect her. It was as though she was invincible. However, the world always proved her wrong. When she was at her best, the world gave her something that was the worst. In the corner of her cage, Casa cringed and screamed. Her fingers laced around the bars to the point that they had turned white. Nova's sky blue eyes went wide. A piercing noise escaped her mouth.
"WHAT"S HAPPENING TO HER?!?!"
Her voice was raspy, and tears strained her face. She couldn't hide how much she cared for her sister any longer. They had broken her.
