Chapter 1

I wake up to my alarm sounding and quickly shut it off. I look out my window and see a blanket of white snow covering the neighborhood. This time of year again. The one that triggers all the bad memories and nightmares. In a few days it's going to be a full year since it happened.

I threw on some old jeans and a long sleeve shirt, put my long brown hair into a messy ponytail and then threw a coat on and headed downstairs.

"Good morning Jade," My mom said as she set a bowl of cereal in front of me. "Alice called, she said she'll be here in fifteen minutes, so eat fast."

Alice was my best friend. She was the only one who didn't stare at me after my tragedy. My existence was finally recognized after that by everyone at school, I was finally noticed, but it didn't last long. I went back to being the forgotten one only months after, but I like it better this way. Alice was the only person I needed to get through school.

"I'm going to wait for her outside," I say getting up from the table. I kiss my mom on the cheek and walk out the door.

I step off the clear porch and onto the white snow making a crunchy sound with my shoes. I sit on the curve of the sidewalk and wait. Might as well enjoy my time away from school as much as I can. There's no place I hate more than high school. But then again, what eighteen year old doesn't hate school?

I take my headphones out when suddenly someone is standing beside me.

"Hi there," Says the tall fair skinned boy. His short brownish hair nicely combed. He looks at least 20.

"Uh, hi," I say a bit uneasy. I have lost the ability to trust people, mostly men. The sight of them makes my blood turn cold and loss of breath.

"Do you mind giving me directions to the nearest gas station?" He says. His cheeks pink from the cold.

Anything to get him away from me. "Go straight down that way," I say pointing with my gloved hands. "Then take a left on the street called Maple," I continue. "Then from there it shouldn't be hard to spot."  I can hear my voice trembling.

"Thank you so much. No matter how long i've lived here I can't seem to navigate around," He says.

"Well good luck with that," I say and walk away. I could feel his gaze on me as I continued walking but I didn't turn back. It wasn't until I saw Jenna walking out of her house that I realized I had walked to far.

Jenna used to be a close friend, but after she became a cheerleader she was too embarrassed to even be seen a foot away from me.

I froze where I stood and accidentaly meet her stare. Her blue eyes widened.

"Oh, Jessica?" She said walking my way. Her blond pigtails jumping along.

"It's, uh, Jade."

"Whatever. What are you doing in front of my house?" She asks pulling on her pink gloves.

"N-nothing, I just uh," I say pointing my thumb over my shoulder and tilt my head a little. "Nothing." I turn on my heel and walk back. Alice should be at my house by now. Better hurry before she freaks.

"Freak," I hear Jenna say from behind me. Her feet crunch the snow and then a car door slams.

I pull out my phone to look at the time. If I don't hurry we're going to be late.

"Jade! Hurry!" Alice says when I finally make it to her car.

"Sorry," I say and take in the warmth of the car.

The car ride is silent, then we arrive at school. Great.

"Well, I'll see you at lunch." Alice says and walks off.

I walk to class slowly and take my seat at the back where there's a perfect view of the courtyard. The teacher begins class and I stare out the window as always, But this time instead of seeing nothing but tables, something catches my eye. Something familiar.
