I know I’ll be waiting a long time for Elias, he needed time to take a proper shower than the one he did at the rink. He always tells me that he just rinses himself off at the rink then goes home and takes a proper shower.
I almost fall asleep outside while I’m waiting but see bright headlights off Elias’ truck. I smile to myself and hop in the passenger’s seat. Elias starts pulling out of the driveway as I buckle myself in.
“Where to?” he asks.
“Wherever you want to go!” I smile.
He laughs lightly to himself and we drive silently, the radio is the only thing producing sound right now. I remember being in Mason’s car, bickering about the events of our dinner date. I stare out the window for a few minutes before Elias pipes up.
“Hey, what happened when you left mine and Jeff’s house?”
“Nothing really, I apologized to Mason and he-“
“Apologized for what, Hadley? You had nothing to apologize for.”
Elias usually only ever used my full name when he was mad, frustrated, or being extremely serious. He usually just stuck to ‘Hads’ as everyone else usually did, except my mother and father. They thought it was better to be more formal and use my full name.
“I overreacted, Elias. The fight was my fault.”
“No it wasn’t!” he almost yells.
He takes a deep breath before speaking again.
“You told me he was checking out that waitress, Hadley. You had every reason to be mad. Don’t keep letting him..” Elias paused as he can’t think of the right word to place in the sentence.
“…Manipulate?” I suggest.
“Yes, don’t keep letting him manipulate you like that. It’s not right.”
“I don’t try to, it’s just… complicated.”
He sighs and parks in front of a subway. Elias takes the key out of the ignition and hops out of the car without another word. I follow behind him; he opens the door for me and waits behind me in line.
We order our subs and sit to eat. Silence, again.
“So, you guys played a good game.” I try to spark up a conversation.
Elias smiles at the mention of the win; his smile is contagious and has me smiling. He begins to explain some plays and how “happy he was of his team” which I think he meant proud but I didn’t bother to correct him, his broken English is amusing.
We decide to hang out at his place for a bit, mine was definitely off limits. I didn’t bother to tell Elias anything that happened last night or this evening. We head to the basement and sit on the floor to play xbox.
“NHL 14?” he suggests.
I nod, we always play NHL 14, he was a lot better than me at first but I’m starting to win some games now. We don’t even call dibs anymore; I just know that he won’t let me be Carolina. I usually resort to Colorado or Vancouver. We play for an hour or so before I take the controller from his hands, toss it behind me and try to score a goal.
“Cheater!” Elias yells followed with a laugh.
I just sit and laugh hysterically as I still can’t score a goal. He shuts off the xbox and turns to me.
“Cheaters have penalties, Hads.”
I gave him a questionable look, not sure if he means consequences… He tackles me and begins tickling me; he knows I’m extremely ticklish.
