What would have happened if I never said yes... where would I be right now? Would we still be smiling together, side by side, watching the sun set? Or would we still be apart like we are now...
There was a soft sniffle. Probably mine. I stared out into the distance, standing on the balcony of my two floor house. A tear fell and rolled into my mouth. I closed my eyes and stood on the railing of the balcony. The rain bled through my clothes, chilling me to the bone. I shivered, eyes still closed, and began to tilt forward....
You're probably wondering where and when this all started... Well it started on the last day of school after school.
Thursday June 29th - 3:30pm (after school)
"Cassie!"
I heard the sound of running behind me and looked over my shoulder. Emma hugged me as we walked down the sidewalk heading home.
She sighed. "Finally, the last day of school."
She looked at me.
"What?" I asked.
"Wanna come on a road trip with me and the others?" Emma asked, a sly grin on her face.
"I'll ask when I get home," I smiled back and ran across the driveway to the door.
My mom answered. "Yes, you can go. But be safe."
I stared at my mom, puzzled. "What?"
Then I knew how she knew about the trip, I looked back and saw Emma grinning from ear to ear. She held her phone in one hand and waved with the other. "See ya tomorrow! We'll come back next weekend!" I sighed, Emma, always one step ahead.
Friday June 30th - 6:45am (my house)
My mom wrapped me up tight in her arms.
"Be safe darling," she whispered softly.
"I will," I replied.
My mom let go and I walked down the driveway to Luke's car. He smiled from the driver's seat, behind the wheel. Emmeline (Emma's sister) helped me put my duffle bag in the trunk.
"Ready for an amazing road trip?" she asked.
I nodded my head with excitement. Neither of us knew that we were heading into a full-on storm. And that is exactly what happened next. We were driving peacefully on the road when a few drops of rain fell on the windshield and windows. At first it was just a drizzle, but it turned into a monster of a storm. Even the windshield wipers couldn't do much with the amount of rain.
"What's happening!!!" Luke screamed. "WHERE ARE WE! STAY CALM!"
"We have to stay cal-" I began to say, but I was interrupted with a crash that changed my life...
Friday June 30th - 7:00pm (hospital)
A nurse kindly handed me a towel which I draped around my back. My mom sat next to me, she put a hand on my shoulder to comfort me. I looked her in the eye, trying to say something. But I couldn't in the state that I was in. The only thing I could do was sit and worry. Somehow, Emmeline and I were hardly even injured by the impact of the car crash.
The doctor came out with a clipboard in his hands. He seemed sad, and that worried me even more. Emmeline stood up from her seat, hardly able to control her tears. The doctor shook his head. He couldn't even say anything while looking at Emmeline and her parents. The three of them were shaking beside each other, sobbing in each other's arms. Meanwhile, Luke's parents hugged and they seemed to be whispering to each other. I didn't bother to listen. My mom asked the two sobbing families if she could help. I didn't know what happened after that. I just blocked the whole world out. I buried my head in my arms, unable to breathe as the tears kept shedding. I fell onto the floor, probably making a dramatic scene. But I wasn't able to control myself. I shriveled up into a ball on the hospital floor and cried, feeling more alone than ever. Emma and Luke and Emmeline had grown up with me. All of us met each other since the moment we were born. Our parents knew each other which made the four of us even closer. They were just like brother and sister to me. Now two of them were gone...
Saturday July 1st - NOW (balcony)
I shivered as the rain splashed against my skin. I cried uncontrollably, shivering from head to toe. I leaned forward to meet my death... But I didn't feel the impact of the ground, I didn't feel nothing. I still felt the pain throbbing in my heart. And I could feel a hand gripping my arm. I opened my eyes to meet Emmeline. She smiled sadly. My smile faded gradually and I let myself cry in my friend's arms.
"I know it's hard, but we have to fight the pain," she whispered.
"But I can't do it..." I shivered.
"You can as long as you have me. I'll be by your side," she made me look at her. "Just promise me you won't try to avoid the problem."
"I can't...."
"Yes you can, please. You're my last family member aside from my parents. You're my only other sister...." her sadness seeped into my soul. "Please."
I nodded sadly, the pain unbearable. And yet I still agreed to stay alive, for my friend. My sister, my family. Emmeline's body shivered against mine.
"Why can't we just end this together?" I asked suddenly.
"Because Em and Luke wouldn't want that. They wouldn't want us to die because of them."
"But...." I tried to think of a way to deny that, but I knew what she said was true.
So I stayed alive. As the years passed, we got over Emma and Luke's deaths. We watched movies together, we faced our own parents' deaths. We made a living and soon grew old together. And still we live till the day fate brings us to another world where we can reunite with our family....
