Once upon a time, there lived a girl. And this is her story...
Madeline POV
My heart skipped a beat when my eyes fell on my crush. She was walking side by side with her friends. Her popular friends. All of them were too preoccupied to notice me. But she did, my crush. She smiled her perfect, flawless smile and looked at me. I could feel my chest rising and falling, my breath quickening with every step. Her smile shrank into a small grin and I could tell that she was blushing. Evelyn, blushing, for me? No. Of course not. She's probably into boys like "normal" people... Tears pricked my eyes. None of my friends knew about my secret, nor did I want to tell them. It would most likely result in them ditching me, thinking I'm a weirdo. This isn't the first time that thought came to my mind, and like usual, I quickened my pace. Whenever I think about telling my friends my secret I always start to quicken my step if I'm walking. Weird I know, but I'm not normal. Not in other people's books that is.
It was 2:45, only 15 more minutes until school finishes. Until I can finally go home and rest from the stress of my crush and my secret.
Evelyn was standing at her locker, smiling as she spoke to her friend. My stomach did a thousand somersaults. I avoided her gaze but a voice nagged me at the back of my mind. Go and talk to her! You can do it! Come on Madeline, go already! I inhaled three times, it did nothing. I started walking faster but had to stop because of people in the hallway. Then my friend tapped my shoulder. I yelped.
"What was that for?" I scold.
"You seemed nervous so I wanted to talk. Everything alright?"
Her words entered through one ear and exited through the other. I looked past her, my eyes set on Evelyn. She was so beautiful and kind, generous. . .
And without thinking, my mouth opened and my worst nightmare happened. I stood before my crush, stuttering and stammering. "I-I. . . ."
"You. . . ?" Evelyn cocked her head.
"I. . . . I LIKE YOU!"
My hands flew up to my mouth. All eyes in the hall were on me. My friend stood, dumbfounded, behind me. I tried to say something but nothing came out of my mouth. Not even a squeak. I ran away, averting everyone's stunned gaze. I ran to the bathroom and sank down to the floor. No one was in there, everything was quiet. Everything but my sobs, echoing off the walls.
A hand touched my shoulder. I looked up, my vision blurred from tears. And then my heart stopped. Evelyn hugged me. She wrapped her arms tightly around me before pulling away.
She wiped the tears from my face with her sleeve. "I know how you feel. . . ."
"What?" I whispered, still choking over my tears.
"I'm like you. I don't mean that as if we're two aliens or some-"
I grinned slightly. "It's okay."
Evelyn stood, holding a hand out to me. "Let's start over." she smiled, "I'm Evelyn. What's your name?"
I grinned as I took her hand. "Madeline."
