"Mom! Dad! I have something to tell you!" I yelled when I walked into my apartment.
"What is it, honey?" My mom replied, running over to me.
"Uh... My class is going on a field trip," I said, trying not to bite my lip, since that's what I do when I lie.
"Where?" Mom asked.
"Uh... To Edmonton..." I replied.
"Edmonton, ALBERTA?" She said, surprised.
"Yes. For about a week..." I said. "And you have to buy the plane tickets. Now. Go. Do it."
"Brooke, I don't think I'm going to let you go on this field trip," Mom said sternly.
"But mom! It's really important!" I whined. "PLEASE! Just go buy the tickets!"
"I'm gonna phone your teacher about this..." Mom said, picking up the phone. I slapped the phone out of her hand.
"No!" I yelled. "The teacher... said not to phone about anything."
"Well, are your friends going on this trip, too?" Mom asked.
"Yes. If you want to phone someone, phone Haley or Morgan's parents." I replied. It didn't feel good to lie, but it had to be done.
"Okay, I'll phone them now!" Mom said. I was hoping that Morgan and Haley had told their parents about this by now.
"Hi, Alicia?" Mom said into the phone. She was phoning Haley's mom. I overheard her talk about the 'field trip to Alberta', and if she has let Haley go on the trip.
"Hmm.. Really? Because I really don't know about this trip... It's so far away," Mom sighed. There was a long pause. Alicia was probably convincing Mom to let me go on the trip.
"Well, I'm convinced. I'll let Brooke go," Mom smiled. I jumped with joy and ran over to Mom and gave her a hug.
"What made you change your mind?" I asked her.
"Well, Alicia was talking about how you kids are growing up, and can make your own decisions in life now. I thought I'd let you go. It is for school, anyway," she responded.
Then the guilt hit me. I had lied to my own MOTHER. How did Haley and Morgan do this? "I'll go buy the plane tickets!"
"Ok," I said. "I'm going to go over to Haley's apartment." Morgan was over there, too. I knew because when my mom was on the phone, I could hear them both talking in the background.
I walked out into the hallway, stepped onto the elevator, and went down to the 10th floor where Haley lived.
"Knock, knock!" I said as I knocked on the door. We all did that so we would know who was at the door.
"Come in!" I heard a voice say. I walked in to Haley's apartment, and saw her and Morgan watching something on the TV.
"What show are you watching?" I asked.
"I dunno. We were flipping through channels and saw this, and thought it was interesting," Morgan replied. I took them both by the arm and walked into Haley's bedroom.
"Hey! We were watching a show there!" Haley yelled at me.
"Where is the yogurt?" I asked, changing the subject.
"It's in the freezer," Haley replied.
"Have you bought your plane tickets yet?" I asked.
"My mom and dad were so happy when they heard I was going away for a week, something about 'finally having peace and quiet' or whatever. I'm sure they already bought my ticket, and even packed my bags!" Morgan said.
"My mom is buying them right now," Haley replied. "Can we go now?"
"No. I have one more question," I said. "How do you lie to your parents and not feel guilty about it?"
"It's hard to feel guilty when you know you are lying for a good reason," Haley said.
"Ok. Thanks. You can go watch your random show now," I said, opening up the door for them. "I'm gonna go now. See ya,"
"Ok, bye, Brooke!" Haley smiled.
"See ya later, alligator," Morgan said.
"In a while, crocodile," I replied. I went back up to the 17th floor, where I lived, and thought about what Haley had said. The words kept repeating in my head, and I didn't know what to feel anymore.
My mom walked over to me. "Good news! I bought the tickets for you!" Mom smiled, giving them to me. "You should start packing."
"Why? Where is she going?" My little sister, Maddy, asked.
"She's going on a school field trip, honey," Mom replied.
"I can tell you more about it later, Maddy," I said to her so she would leave. I heard the phone ring. I answered it.
"Hello?" I asked.
"Hi, this is Piper's dad. I was wondering if Piper was with you right now," I had totally forgot about Piper and Toby's parents. Ugh, looks like I had to lie again.
"Actually, Piper and Toby are here right now. We are going on this school field trip, and we were just talking about it," I said. "I'll tell you more about it. We are going to the... Aquarium for a week, maybe less than a week, to learn about... Uh... Marine life. Could you tell Toby's parents about the field trip?"
"You can tell Piper she has my permission. And I'll phone Toby's parents right now," he said. I love how calm and kind Piper's dad is. I hung up the phone and started packing for our big trip.
