Given the chance he could, Eddie Kaspbrak would ask only one question to somebody who had all the answers in the universe he'd choose the question "Why me?"
Something he asked himself on a daily basis. Why him? What did he do to deserve his terrible fate? He lost his dad at age five to cancer and was basically given the slowest death sentence you could possibly think of right after.
   SCID.
Yes, SCID. Also known as the Bubble Baby Disease.
SCID stands for severe combined immunodeficiency. Or to put it in simpler terms, a disease where one's immune system sucks so terribly, taking a breath of fresh air could literally kill you.
So, Eddie's life was pretty boring. No friends besides his mom and his nurse, Karen.
He never had plans besides doing a daily lesson over skype with some Mr.Skyes and scrolling endlessly through tumblr or reading a book.
He could only describe himself as jealous of normal people like Mr.Skyes who took stuff like checking the mail or walking their dog for granted, or even as a burden. He wanted that so bad. So damn bad. What did it feel like to have dewy grass under your bare feet after it rained? What was it like to big your toes into beach sand on a hot day and have it feel like your skin was burning? To go to a public school? To get sick? What was it like to live an average old life?
However, Eddie managed to find happiness in the simplest things like colors. A concept that he never fully grasped.
You see, Eddie's life didn't have much color to it. His walls were all white as paint could potentially kill him. His clothes and bedsheets were white as he couldn't risk any dyes or such being on them. The only color in his life were his silver laptop and iPhone.
So yes, colors were something he absolutely loved. He still could never decide a favorite.
Something else Eddie loved was pictures of people on adventures and vacations. Well, not so much loved as he envied them.
Eddie hadn't even been outside his house onto the front porch in sixteen years. The idea of a vacation was impossible to him.
He didn't care if it was just a walk down to the stop sign or just to the mailbox, Eddie wanted adventure.
And how little Eddie knew that adventure lived right next door.
