Chains.
Esme woke to the pain of metal cuffs shackled around her wrists. Beads of sweat rolled down her forehead and soaked her hair. The smell of dirty laundry mixed with the citrus of a lemon lingered in the air, she could almost taste it.
Her entire body was chained to the wall. Her eyes filled with tears, which caused her vision to haze, and she was sore. Pain welled up in her shoulders, down her spine, on her hips, she was weak and couldn't run if she tried.
The distinct consistent sound of a faucet dripping was ringing nearby. It came in three rapid water droplets before it took a small intermission before falling again. The clatter of footsteps shuffled through the door, like a little kid jumping in puddles.
Along with pain, Esme felt cold. There was no breeze where she was, but she could feel the twinge of ice constantly hitting her like a bag of rocks. The only thing covering her was the shackles, nothing else. She was completely naked.
"Did you sleep well?" A painfully recognizable voice said.
Esme bit down on her lip until she tasted blood, the last thing she wanted to hear was that voice. A shiver shot up and down her spine, and a single tear fell down her cheek.
"Please..." she whispered, her voice so light it was barely audible. "Let me go."
Her vision blurred, and she could only see hues of light and the shadow of a man walking towards her. He pressed a cold index finger to her lips, "Don't cry. It'll make it even more awkward for me. We both wanted this to happen."
He traced his finger down her jawline and kissed her neck, Esme shut her eyes so tightly she saw stars. More tears escaped her eyes and streamed down her cheeks, "Not like this."
He ignored her, only continuing his act. She tried to break free of her restraints, but they only pulled back with more force. With each movement she tried to take, her body ached and warned her to stop. "You're married," she reminded him. "You have kids. What would they say if they find this?"
Nolan pulled back and stared at her intensely, and she forced herself to look at him with the same level of fire, maybe even added flame. "My wife is no better. She's a selfish, cheating bitch who's probably doing it with some other guy right now. My kids have to put up with her secrets and lies. They already look at me like a stranger, this is just me living up to their idea."
Esme was disgusted with his excuse. She dodged his kisses and tried even harder to break free. But her antics only made him become more forceful. He grabbed her chin and centered her face to where he wanted it. With his other hand, he traced up her arms and down her figure. She grimaced and tried her hardest to back away from his touch.
"I'm going to get what I want, so it's best you stop struggling." His hot breath sent Esme's neck hairs to stand tall.
More tears trickled down her chin, and the bitter taste of salt entered her mouth. Her eyes were glassy, like a porcelain doll, and teardrops clung to her eyelashes. Her upper lip quivered as he moaned, not so subtly immersed in his own pleasure.
"I don't like this. Stop. Now." Images of her childhood ran across her mind, like memories on several television screens gliding across a conveyor belt. Faded reminders of high school assemblies replayed over and over in her mind on a loop. "What you're doing is illegal. I said no, and no means no."
Nolan's fists tightened. "You're so uncooperative," he said through gritted teeth.
It was a matter of seconds before he raised his tightened fist and aimed it at Esme. She watched the inevitable happen, in slow motion, as if she were watching a movie. The last thing she remembered was the harsh impact of his knuckles when they made contact with her forehead.
Nolan sucked the blood from his fist and examined her fresh wound. Esme laid limp and unconscious, a gash with blood overflowing from her head made him queasy.
"It's a shame it had to be this way, Esmeralda Cantor."

This was one of the hardest chapters I've ever written. Not only because of the content but because of how I felt while writing this.
I'm so sorry if this made you uncomfortable reading and I hope that this chapter didn't make you lose interest. I tried my best in making this scene as little graphic as possible, but it was nearly impossible.
Just know that I didn't insert this chapter just to see your reaction, this is a very crucial chapter to the plot of the story. Without it, I wouldn't be able to get the actual story going.
