"No arm candy today, y/n?" Lucy asked you as you walked down the hallway alone, for the third time this week.

"Nah, he hasn't been around" you shook your head.

"Sure he isn't trying to dump you?" She nudged you.

"Aha, I mean I'd understand if he was" you laughed, trying to shrug it off for the sake of friendship.

Deep down you knew it was his father. It wasn't something he told just anyone so you were honored he told you and promised to keep it secret. That's just what you've done. Especially now that you're worried about him when you would want to tell, you haven't. Though your gut churned inside you pushed through.

After school you stopped by the police station to talk to Hopper. He was the chief in town but many people had seen him around often. You sat down in his office after being allowed in.

"What is it?" He asked, sitting at his desk across from you.

"I just—I haven't heard anything from Billy and wanted to know if there's been anything about him ? Missing persons ? Shit, somethin?" You said, desperate for answers or just something.

"Nothin has come in, truancy officers are shit around here so they haven't followed up with his absence. Maybe Max? Someone who's close with her" he shrugged.

"Yeah, I guess I'll do that. Thanks anyways" you smiled back and stood up to leave.

Driving through town, looking for Max or someone. You ended up at their house, parked outside you but your nails waiting. Your car was silent, tapping your feet with nervousness. Maybe waiting for someone to come outside. Billy's car was in the driveway, as it had been the last few times you checked in on him.

"Fuck it" you mumbled and got out the car.

You were so tired of being sick and worried so you had to deal with it. Banging on his door and waiting angrily for an answer, or none.

The door swung open, Max was the one who opened it. She glared up at you.

"What do you want?" She asked, probably irritated you banged on the door so loud.

"Where is he? I'm tired of this bullshit game" you declared, looking around her and inside the house.

His bench press was empty, tv off and ashtray was clear of any ashes. It had looked as if he hadn't touched that stuff in weeks. It made your heart sink, maybe they were cleaning up after his death. Trying to erase them from their memories. You shook that thought out of your head.

"Not now, y/n" Max shook her head.

"I'm not fucking around. Sorry, Max" you pushed past her and to his room.

You opened his door and walked in. He laid on his back, cigarette smoke escaping his lips. His buttoned shirt was unbuttoned four down, as always. His jeans done up like always. He looked completely normal.

"Max! Fuck off!" He growled without looking up.

"Wrong person" you said.

He shot up in bed, "Jesus, y/n, get out of here"

You saw his face, beat up and bloody. Your breath was caught in your throat, tears stinging your eyes.

"Billy" you whispered and ran to cradle him.

"This is why I didn't want you here, princess" he said, his back to you.

"I thought you were dead, Billy. You can't do this to me. I'm here for you" you said into his hair.

"I can't let you see me weak, I can't be weak for my princess" he sobbed now.

"Well maybe it's time for me to be strong for my prince" you smiled and he turned in your arms.

"I love you so much" he said, stroking his thumb across your cheekbone and the lone tear that had fallen.

"I love you more, asshole" you laughed, bringing the corners of his mouth up into a smile as well.
