I sit on the side of the football field, waiting for Sophia to be done with cheerleading practice, but mostly watching Zander at football practice. I have no shame staring at him now because I have the excuse that I'm just observing the practice.
Sophia waves at me from the sidelines and I wave back, giggling at her when she loses her balance from the middle of the pyramid, making everybody fall. I should've gotten a video of that, damn it.
I go back to watching Zander when somebody startles me from behind.
"So you like him?" I turn around and see the new guy.
"No, I'm just watching the practice." Then I realize what I said, "I-I-I mean who?"
He chuckles, "It's so obvious."
"It Is?" I ask and let out a breath. He nods and sits next to me.
"Maybe I could give you some advice from a guy?" He offers and I nod, "Make him jealous."
I think about it for a second before speaking, "How?"
"Date somebody else-or fake date somebody. Just to get his attention. Then he'll realize what he's missing."
I stare at the ground and he continues, "Lucky for you, I'd happily help you."
"You? I don't even know your name" I say and he chuckles.
"James" He replies and I stare at him for a second. He is super attractive so that's a plus.
"What's in it for you?" I ask and he shakes his head.
"Nothing at all," He says and I let out a sigh.
"Okay." I answer and he smirks, "So how do we start this thing?"
"Like this," He says and his lips capture mine before I can reply. We both pull apart and he puts his arm around me.
People stare to stare, but it's only some girls on the cheerleading team.
"Now the plan goes into action." He continues, "You need to get on the cheerleading team"
"What? No way!" I exclaim and he shushes me.
"You need to. It'll make him even more jealous. Also, I'm gonna get on the football team if that makes you feel better."
I scoff, "good luck with that, the coach is really strict with who he lets on the team."
"Oh, babe, you really don't know me," He says and I look at him with confusion, "I'm a pro,"
I roll my eyes, "So do I actually have to get on that stupid cheerleading squad?"
"Yes you do," He states.
-
"Hey, Sophia?" I ask in the middle of the hallway the next day and stop walking.
"Yeah what is it?" she asks while trying to fit books in her bag.
"I was wondering if I could be on the cheerleading team?" I ask and she drops the books she's holding and squeals, attacking me in a hug, "So is that a yes?"
"YES!" she screams and people look at us weirdly but we gain our composure and walk to the football field together.
We walk into the girls' locker room and she hands me a uniform, "What the fuck is this?" I reply after seeing the uniform.
"Your outfit," She says and winks, "You'll be at the top of the pyramid."
"So that means I get a shorter skirt? That doesn't logically make sense. The skirts are short enough as they are." I whine but she shrugs her shoulders.
"Sorry, but we don't have anything other than an extra small," She grins at me and skips out of the locker room.
Just do it, it's for a good cause... sort of.
I put on the top and the short skirt, even if I didn't feel good in it. I take a deep breath before walking out onto the field and try to go unnoticed but I hear Sophia yell at me.
"Oh my god, you're so hot" She yells and winks but I internally groan because at that moment everybody's attention was on me.
I look over at the football field and see Zander staring at me, but he gets a whack in the head from the coach. Then my gaze moves to James, who is glaring at Zander. Weird.
I walk the rest of the way to where the cheerleaders are and some of them send me dirty looks.
"Ok girls, well we're gonna start Claire off at the top of the pyramid. Let's get information" She says and I hear this girl say something under her breath.
"She's probably such a slut"
"Excuse me," I say and turn to her, "Do you have something you'd like to say to my face?"
She looks taken back, "N-no"
"That's what I thought, so shut your mouth." I reply and let out a breath, "How exactly am I supposed to get on the top?" I ask Sophia and she shrugs her shoulders.
"I told you it's the only position we have left because the other girl...well... nevermind just get on top" She rambles and I shake off the weird feeling before climbing on a bunch of girls.
I shakily make it to the top and smile once two girls take hold of my feet and there's no way I can fall. I hear a whistle from the side and look to see James smirking at me. I put my middle finger out but quickly cover it by blowing a kiss his way after remembering we are 'dating'.
Then I suddenly feel like I have a tickle in my nose, and bam, I sneeze. The girls go down like dominos and scream while they're at it. I also scream, but I fall on a bunch of other girls, so it doesn't hurt that much.
"Ok well, we need to work on that guys, but it was pretty good," Sophia says and cheers.
"Pretty good? This bitch is ruining everything" One of the girls yells.
"I haven't even been here for a whole practice, how am I ruining everything?" I ask and she goes silent. Gosh, all these girls have something to say but the minute I talk back, they get too scared.
"I'm gonna wait for you inside the school, Sophia," I say quietly, "And to the rest of you" I put up my middle fingers, "I hope you reached your goals of becoming the biggest bitches I know." I grin and walk into the school, sliding my back against the wall.
From the window, I can see the football practice and I watch Zander play. He always wanted to play football, and I guess he is living his dream. My eyes slowly shift to James who I am surprised is actually good at football. I might even say he's better than Zander.
After another 20 minutes, Sophia comes inside and we walk silently to her car together.
"Where do you think you're going?" I hear from behind me and see James walking our way.
"Home dumbass" I reply and he smirks.
"Don't you think I should drive you home since we live right next to each other?" He questions and I sigh. He is not gonna let this go.
Sophia sends me a look that reads we are so talking about this later.
I walk with James to his car and get in the passenger's side. He starts the car and the drive is pretty silent. We park in his driveway and we both get out.
"Thanks for the ride," I say and he smiles.
"Anytime." He replies and I start walking to my house when I see Zander glaring at James.
