The Beginning of The End (Chapter One)

Meline's P.O.V.

“We are watching something on TV,” yells Luke, his voice traveling from the living room to the hallway I stand in.

 “Be there in a sec,” I shout in the general direction of Luke. I run to the kitchen, grabbing a soda and some popcorn kernels. When the popcorn is ready I reach for a bowl from the cupboard, place it on the counter and dump the butter-coated popcorn into the bowl. Once everything is done, I sprint towards the couch, just as an advertisement finishes.

“What movie are we watching,” I ask curiously

“TV Show,” Luke corrects, “And it’s The Walking Dead.”

I seat myself between my best (girl) - friends; Vivienne and Rose, leaning against the couch, while occasionally grabbing some popcorn, enjoying this moment of peace.

Next thing I know the guys grab the popcorn from us, not that I really care, we still have the pop and chips. Being the "macho" guys they are they have to cheer about their wonderful achievement, little do they know I could easily take the popcorn back. I shake my head, a smile on my lips, looks like the boys are being boys. Delusional thinking that they are stronger and "better," then the rest of us. Ridiculous. Utterly ridiculous.

Forty-Five Minutes Later…

A Wendy’s commercial is playing when it is interrupted, with a news channel, we try to change the channel since we don’t want to watch some boring old news-lady talk, we check multiple channels but the same thing is playing on repeat;

“We are sorry to interrupt you, but an urgent News-Report is in progress, It seems as if the H1N1 Virus that we had thought to have been getting an increased outbreak in has now been categorized as the H1Z1 Virus, it mutates the normal symptoms into something horrific, slows the heart-rate, making the unfortunate recipients of the virus sluggishly move as well as turns them into cannibalistic-like beasts. Though by themselves they are not very harmful, in a group they are utterly dangerous. We advise you to call all family members, barricade your doors, and STOCK UP! The infection is heading to the California area spreading from Canada. You have mere hours before the inevitable happens.  All people with this virus or any other type of flu should not be accepted into households, hospitals have been closed to prevent infection. Stay safe. Stay away.”

Everyone around me freezes, filled with so much shock they can’t speak or move, it is Rose’s loud sobs that break the silence.

“W-we-we ne-need to do something,” she stutters.

“No Shit Sherlock,” I weakly laugh, attempting to inject humor into the conversation, but failing. Everyone’s glassy eyes stare at me; I awkwardly mumble a sorry and look down at the ground.

Vivienne has started hiccupping uncontrollably, tears in her eyes. I take a deep breath trying to brush away my own tears, it is no use, and I start to sob silently. Even the normally carefree guys are breaking down, Luke can’t handle it, crying and then excusing himself. Jonas bites down on his knuckles, an attempt to prevent any tears from escaping. David is in the corner of the room, his head bowed, hair covering his face. I turn my head to the side, there across the room is Ryder, we stare at each other, a nod of understanding, and then I start yelling.

“Okay everyone,” I shout, “Get ahold of yourselves, if we want to survive this, we must start now. Jonas, David, start on barricading the doors.”
