School in Sight (Chapter Two)

Meline's P.O.V.

“You guys,” Rose moans, “They’re coming, what do we do? They’re coming.”

“Calm down,” Jonas yells at her.

She continues to cry, so loudly and agonizingly I have to clasp my hands over my ears, I still can hear her I wince every time I open my eyes and see her shoulders shudder as she shakes with sobs.

“Shut up! You are attracting attention to us; we are all going to die if you keep crying!”

Wrong words, I think in my head. Play it cool, you weren’t supposed to make her more worried. Ugh, guys don’t understand these things; I push aside Jonas and slap Rose lightly on the cheek.

“Rose get ahold of yourself,”

She continues blubbering like a baby without its bottle.

“Thanks Jonas,” I say sarcastically as I turn to him. He sheepishly runs his hand through his dark hair.

“Rose,” I say as I turn to her, “No one is going to die, we are in this together. We always will be,”

I turn my head and notice Ryder scowling at me, as if to say, how do you know we are going to survive. If I was telepathic I would say back, I’m trying to help her, but since I’m not I give him a simple yet effective glare. He realizes that I noticed his disapproval so he turns his head to the side, shielding my view of his facial expression.

Just to annoy Ryder I give Rose a quick hug before turning around. We brace ourselves, but nothing happens, with David’s now steady pace of 40 MPH, we are on our way to the school.

Ten Minutes Later…

We stop the car half a block away from the school, just in case. We are in someone’s backyard when we notice two of the infected, sluggishly running towards us. We have to defend ourselves; Jonas is the first of the group to kill one, repeatedly stabbing one in the eye until it reaches its brain. Kyle had swung his baseball bat, cracking the bones of the other zombie with each blow.

Silent but deadly, I think, then I grimace remembering that the infected were once people, heck they still are people. They just are sick. What kind of person kills a sick person? I am disgusted with myself and my friends, when I realize it is our only choice. I sigh, exasperated, wouldn’t they want to be dead, rather then be cannibals anyway? I know I would.

Thoughts run through my head as we near the school. I finally remember something, the reason Ryder wants to stop at the school must be because Julia has a dance rehearsal today, and he is hoping that she is still here.  Why couldn’t he just tell us that? Does he not trust his closest group of friends? As we near the school I hear groans, in front of us is 60 some of the infected.

“Oh god,” I say aloud, all together they are deeply disturbing to look at. They have pale lifeless skin that is peeling as blisters cover every surface of their body, their hair has fallen out, and their eyes are read and bloodshot. Not to mention the fact of the boils on their heads where head should have been, they were oozing out a head-dress of green pus. The most disturbing part of it all is that at least 40 of them are just teens our age. Vivienne and Kyle keel over to gag, Rose refuses to look. Everyone else stands their silently, shocked.

It was suicide if we went in that school, suicide. We make a group decision to make camp at a house. Deciding that we can always head to the school the next day, Ryder argues that we can’t leave because Julia might be there. I point out the fact that if we go to the school we would all die, and that what use would he be dead? He nods whilst turning away, probably about to get some sleep.

Six Hours Later…

Ouch, I think silently, someone or something is kicking me repeatedly, though each kick gets weaker and weaker. I turn my body ready to defend myself when I see an image I would never expect, an image that would forever burn into my mind. Luke had grasped Ryder by the throat, an unnatural look of menace present on his face.

“Oh my god,” I yell, utterly disturbed.

Luke merely grins, showing cracked lips surrounding white teeth. I feel like punching him, but I refrain myself. So I take advantage of what I’ve learned from multiple Judo & Martial arts classes, and tackle him. He is temporarily stunned so I grab his arm and yank him back up turning his head in what might appear to be a headlock but is really the sleepers hold. He struggles against me, kicking but finally falling unconscious. I quickly drop him, yelling at the others to wake up.

Those awake sit Ryder up while asking him if he is alright, his response is nodding and then breaking into a violent coughing fit. We all are thinking the same thing. Why did Luke try to kill Ryder? The very idea seems surreal. Two best friends. One trying to kill the other. What was wrong with Luke, and the most important question of all; what are we going to do when he wakes up?
