GAVIN'S POV
I woke up to see a bright light that blinded my eyes coming through my window. I squinted and looked around the room to see if Abby had left. Nope, she was still squished up against me, poor thing. I wrapped my arms around her and sighed. I couldn't believe that her own mother, her MOTHER of all people, was so abusive to her. It was depressing. But, from what Abby's told me over and over again, her mother is bipolar, and always has been. She also had a rough childhood, and lots of things that reminded her of her childhood made her furious. Unfortunately for Abby, they were almost exactly alike (minus the bipolarity), so her mother was always mad at her. Abby's dad forced her into a divorce when she was very little, so she doesn't know much about him, and he doesn't really want anything to do with her, her 10-year-old sister Avery, and her 8-year-old brother Aiden. Abby's mother is usually sleeping, which is a good thing and a bad thing. Good because she's not always yelling and Abby, and bad because if you make the slightest noise in the house, she can hear it from a mile away and immediately goes into grizzly-bear-that-had-its-food-taken-away-and-was-poked-a-lot-during-hibernation mode, if that makes any sense. I couldn't stand to see Abigail suffer like this, and yesterday was the last straw.
My train of thought was stopped when Abby turned to face me as she yawned. "Morning!" she said with a smile. I looked into her dark blue eyes that were sparkling from the light that was coming through my window. Her hair dark, silky black hair was spilt around her shoulders. She caught me staring. "What?" She raised her left eyebrow.
"Oh, nothing...just thinking." I said. Damn it! I thought. What was I doing thinking about my BEST. FRIEND like that? I shook my head out of the thought. "Did you sleep ok?"
"Yeah, much better." She said as she sat up and rubbed her eyes. Suddenly, her head perked up into the air. She sniffed the air like a dog and jumped out of bed like some search dog looking for a fugitive. "Is that...is that...PANCAKES I smell?!" She looked back at me with wide eyes. I nodded.
"Your favorite!" I said, standing up and fixing my bed hair. Abby gave me a look that read "please hurry up so that I can go inhale the whole world." I laughed. "Just go!..." I said, shoving her out of my room with my foot. "I'll be down in a second."
ABBY'S POV
"I'll be down in a second." Gavin said as he pushed me out of his room. I flew down the stairs like a hungry hawk screaming "PANCAAAAAAKES!!!!!!" I felt like an idiot, but what can I say? I go crazy for pancakes. I switch-leaped off of the last six or seven steps of the stairs and tripped over my foot as I landed. The next thing I knew, I was on my face, laughing hysterically. What's wrong with me this morning? I thought. I stood up and sprinted into the kitchen. Ms. Marsden gave me a startled glance. "Those are pancakes, right?!" I said, breathing heavy and looking like an idiotic creeper.
"No, it's french toast." She said looking back at the stove. My heart sunk. I shuffled over to the breakfast nook and sat down, depressed and disappointed.
"But, but, I fell on my face for pancakes, not french toast!" I whimpered. Ms. Marsden laughed.
"I'm kidding, sweetheart!" She chuckled as she set a pile of plain pancakes in front of me. "GAVIN!!!!" She yelled. "YOUR PANCAKES ARE GETTING COLD!!!"
"COMING MOM!!!!" Gavin yelled from upstairs. He came running down the stairs and hopped into the seat next to me. His eyes lit up when he saw the pile of pancakes in front of him. "Mom, today I'm going to die of diabetes."
"Yes, Ms. Marsden." I agreed. "Either that or we're going to gain 100 pounds and not be able to compete in the Michigan State Competition!" I shoved a forkful of pancakes into my mouth.
"Well we wouldn't want that, now would we?" she asked with a smirk. "Now hurry up, because I've got a surprise for you, Abby." My head lifted up from the heavenly aroma of the pancakes that were soon to be in my face. "S-surprise? For ME!!" I asked. God, why did I sound like a toddler?!
"You'll see, sweety. You'll see..."
