CHAPTER ONE

"Sage, I know you're my mate and all, but I just don't think you'll be a good Alpha Female," Brent sighed.

I frowned. "What are you trying to say?"

"Sage, even you should be able to understand this. I. Do. Not. Want. You. As. My. Mate. I reject you," Brent said. "Now let's keep this to ourselves, okay?"

I bit my lip to keep from crying as I walked away from him. This wasn't how it was supposed to be. I was supposed to find my mate and be saved from this hell hole. But my mate doesn't want me. I closed my eyes and sank into the soft grass. No one but me knew about this little lake, and for that, I was thankful. That meant no one could find me and make fun of me. Tears trickled down my face as I curled up into a ball on the ground.

A branch snapped and I jumped to my feet. A vampire stood in between two oak trees staring at me. I didn't dare move, not wanting him to chase me. The vampire slowly stepped forward with his hands held out in front of him, palms up. It was how vampires let other supernatural beings know that they meant no harm. Witches held out a white cloth; and werewolves stayed in human form. It was a showing of peace.

"Sage Flores-Turner, I'm Asher Woode," the vampire told me.

"How do you know my name?" I asked.

"My people have been watching you," he replied. "You are a witch- werewolf hybrid."

I stared at him, my eyes wide. "I'm sorry. What did you just say? I am definitely not a witch- werewolf hybrid."

            "You didn't know?" Asher asked.

            "No," I shook my head.

"Oops," Asher chuckled nervously. "Well... now you know!"

"So why are you here again?" I asked.

"To take you back to Head Quarters," he responded.

"I'm getting out of this hell hole?!" I squealed loudly. "Thank you, thank you, thank you!"

I threw my arms around his neck and squeezed. Asher stiffened under my embrace and then awkwardly hugged me back. Finally I would be free! But wait a minute, what about Derek?

"What about my brother?" I inquired.

            "What about him?" Asher asked.

"He'll freak out if I don't go home," I told him.

            "Call him," Asher suggested.

"And tell him what? 'Oh, hey Derek, just thought I'd let you know that I'm a witch-werewolf hybrid and I'm going to god knows where with some vampire that's been following me around. Love ya bye'? I can't say that! He'd kill me" I exclaimed.

"Would he really?" Asher asked curiously.

I punched him in the arm. Asher winced in pain and rubbed his arm dramatically. Rolling my eyes, I pulled out my phone and called Derek. It rang three times before he finally answered.

"Sage?! Where the hell have you been?" Derek yelled into the phone. "You've been gone for three hours! Where are you?"

I waited patiently until he was through with his rant before speaking. "I'm going to be gone for a while, so don't freak out. I'll be back when I feel like coming back. And Derek... that might be years."

"Where are you going?" Derek asked me.

"I honestly don't know," I glared meaningfully at Asher. "It's called Head Quarters or something like that."

"There's somebody with you, isn't there?" Derek accused.

            "Yes." No sense in lying.

"Who is it? Put them on the phone," Derek ordered.

I held the phone out towards Asher. "Um, he wants to talk to you."

Asher took the phone and held it up to his ear. He listened silently to what my brother said, nodding his head every few moments. I walked away to give him some privacy and waited as Asher talked to my brother. Whatever Asher said to him must've sounded good because I could no longer hear my brother's voice shouting through the phone.

"Well, we're good to go," Asher told me cheerfully.

"How did you get him to be okay with this?" I wondered.

"I told him the same thing I told you," he shrugged his shoulders. "Honesty is the best policy."

I snorted. "Honesty my ass. What else did you say to him?"

"I may have told him you had to undergo lots of tests and training to make sure you wouldn't kill anyone and that it may take years and he should respect your decision because you were miserable with your pack," Asher said as though it were no big deal.

"And he was okay with that?"

"Obviously; you're going aren't you?" Asher scoffed at me.

            "I'll punch you," I threatened.

"Jeez, woman, lay off on the violence," he grumbled.

I smirked at him and got off the ground. I followed him out of the forest to where he had a black Audi parked. Whoever he worked for must be paying him a hell of a lot of money. I got into the car and Asher sped off into the night. I closed my eyes in happiness; I was finally free of that hell.
