MINA
"Mother!" She heard Kai yell while she watched, in pure horror, how their mother's eyes rolled back and her body went limp.
Many servants rushed to her aid, but Kai had run to their mother's side in a flash. He held her effortlessly and tried to lift her face up. But her head lolled back. A small thread of blood poured from her eyes, like silent red tears.
"Mother, please!"
"Miss Lea!" One of their castle's maids pleaded while she held Mina's mother's hand.
"Go, find father!" Kai roared loudly to nobody in particular. But it was enough for Mina to wake up from her shock.
Her feet went into action. She ran, she flew, she jumped. Her nimble figure could go through every crack and her curious mind remembered the fastest passageways to get to their father's office. Her breathing was hard on her ears, but her legs were unstoppable.
Finally, she saw him, walking through one of the castle's hallways.
Her father spotted her, his dark eyes narrowed for a second as he thought of reprimanding his only daughter for running around the castle again, but then as he saw the look on Mina's eyes his expression completely transformed. He was alert.
"Mother," was all she needed to say.
Her father's face fell, his world shattered. He knew exactly what she meant, the most dreadful time for her mother had come.
He followed her, barking orders as he did, sending men to look for the wisest doctors and warlocks of the North.
Mina had thought that she had seen the worst of her mother already, but nothing had prepared her for the sight she faced when they got back to her. Kai still hugged their mother's frame, but now he was kneeling on the floor, rocking her body gently as his whole tunic was tainted with blood; blood that poured out from their mother's mouth, eyes, ears and nose.
She stared in horror.
The elders had said that she wasn't supposed to die yet.
But what if they had lied?
She looked so pale.
"Mina!" somebody shouted from afar. "Mina!"
The image blurred as the yelling became increasingly louder.
"Mina!" Her eyes flew open and she instantly broke into fits of coughing. She tried to breathe, while she slowly sat up, but her throat felt like it had eaten a desert for dinner and downed it with seawater... which wasn't too far from the actual truth. She remembered the rescuing, the ship, and the angry sea.
Her mother had always said that one of the scariest feelings in the world was that of drowning, she had been right. At the memory of her mother, Mina felt a little prick to her heart, she hadn't expected that memory to suddenly pop up; the memory of that night over two years ago, when it all began.
She coughed some more and felt her brother gently pat her back.
Her skin felt like it had grown scales and her lips were sandpaper dry. Her body was sore and had sand in places where the light don't shine. But at least she was alive.
And, thankfully, so were Theo, Lizzy and her brother.
They had landed on some beach's coast, where the waves gently caressed the sand, the palm trees swayed in the wind, and music could be heard from afar.
