Chapter 7

Peter's POV

"CHRIS!" I screamed again. I attempt to rush forward, but Jane clamps a hand on my shoulder.

"It's too dangerous, Pete!" she looks agonized to tell me this. I look back at Chris' slowly dissolving form, as the vortex slowly drags him into the swirling mass. I stare into the light as the last wisp of him vanished. He's gone. The vortex's seemingly endless spiraling is slowing.

"The mass of his body plus all of that stuff must've stabilized it!" Serenity calls over the fading howling of the portal. "I should be able to turn it off!"

"Are you insane?!" I cry. "What'll happen to Chris?! There are limitless dimensions out there, and you're closing off his way home!" I can't imagine Chris being left to fend for himself wherever the portal whisks him off to.

"Peter, if we don't turn it off we'll endanger our entire population! That thing's not stable!" shrieks Nicole. Suddenly, Serenity hurls herself forward, yanking a red cord from the gateway. The buzzing ceases. The lights flickers on. I shut my mouth for a heartbeat. Then I explode.

"WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?! YOU JUST SEALED HIM IN THERE!" I screamed. I was a complete octopus, flailing my arms this way and that.

"Peter, will you KINDLY SHUT YOUR MOUTH?" demands Nicole. "The tech here isn't in good enough condition to uphold the portal!" I close my mouth under her command. The gears in my head are working quickly. St. Louisa isn't exactly a hub for education. The only place I could imagine finding sophisticated equipment for such a feat as interdimensional travel. . . My mind is working faster now.

"Meet me at the end of the bottom hallway by the doors tomorrow at EXACTLY 7:30 A.M." I say through gritted teeth. "Do NOT be late. With that, I leave the Tech room.
