It's the weekend, I'm sleeping in for the day. But that was soon ruined when my phone started ringing. I lazily slammed my hand on it and dragged it to me. Answering it, my sleepy voice spoke, "Hello?" I heard a frantic Kaylie. "Devin! You need to get to my house. Stepmom is going wild." Her voice went silent, and I heard her stepmom yelling all over the place.

I got up, "be there five minutes!" I didn't give her any time to answer before I hung up. I dressed in tattered jeans, plaid shirt, and my cowboy boots. I hurriedly and grabbed my keys. My mom who is off, stared at me confused. I had no time, to explain. I ran out and jumped in my truck, starting it up. My foot was down on the accelerator, as I got to her house. I have no time for my truck to stop before I hit it in park, turned it off, and got out.

I noticed the stepmom irate in the kitchen. I opened the door, not caring. "What-" She noticed it was me and her attitude changed. "Kaylie, Ame! Come on!" I shouted and they came down ready to leave. That's when a cold hand slapped itself on my shoulder. "They ain't going nowhere." Her voice sharp and firm. I turned "it's obvious, that Y'all haven't been here awhile. Due to the numerous boxes littered around. I'd say about a week. But you're in the south, honey. If we get asked to help someone, we gonna do it." I looked her deep into her eyes, as I shrugged her hand off of me.

Her body, eyes never wavered from the anger that held behind those eyes. "Yeah, well, who cares." She said, "they are staying here." Her persistence is good. I chuckled as I gave them my keys "wait in the truck." They didn't even ask they just went. "Well, I'm their friend. So, I'm taking it into my hands to protect them. If you don't change your attitude around them, it won't be just me showing up." I walked out leaving her to stand there, frozen. I got in, and looked at their shocked faces, as they had a clear view of the kitchen.

"Now, we are going to my house. I have four hours before I have to go to work." I said backing out "y'all can come there if you want, or stay with my mom." I offered. They thought for a moment "we will come with you." I nodded as we parked at my house. "Ima finish my nap, explain to mom and she'll get you whatever y'all need," I said they nodded and I headed up.

•two hours later•

I woke up and showered and put on what I had on when I went to Kaylie's house. "Good afternoon, sweetie." Mom said with a smile. Kaylie and Ame were sitting on the floor chatting away. "Hi. How are y'all doing?" I asked them. They smiled "good." I nodded and went and fixed me something to eat "Y'all want anything it's gonna be a long evening ahead of us." I shouted from the kitchen.

I heard a few murmurs of voices, "sure!" They called back. I fixed them a full plate meal, and we both ate. We hang around waiting for the time to leave.

•at Richie's farm•

They loaded out amazed. "So, this is where you work?" They asked John Richie came out. "I see you brought some fellow friends." John commented with a warm smile "yes, you don't mind do you?" I asked and he looked at me "son, I don't care who you bring." He smiled and started the tour with them. While I went and fed the animals before I started on the harvesting and plowing.

The sun was shining with its warm rays. I was finished with the animals. Ame and Kaylie were sitting on the truck bed of my truck watching. Sweat glistened off my forehead, as I wiped it off. I went and grabbed our sweet teas. Taking a moment's break. "So, this is extremely hard looking work," Kaylie commented after a gulp of tea. Ame nodded. "Well, yeah once you get used to it. It's not that hard." I said leaning on my truck. "Oh. Here comes john's son; Kyle." Kyle came over. "Hi, Y'all must be Kaylie and Ame, we go to the same school," Kylie said.

Yeah, Kyle goes to the school I go to. I do have a major crush, but I can control it. In fact, some people don't even know that I'm gay. Most of them, assume I just don't like the girls at this school. They assume correct, it's just I fancy a dude. Kyle went off with his friends to probably party. "Devin! You have a crush!" My eyes widen at Ame remark. "How'd you know?!" I whisper yelled, Kyle still slightly near. "So obvious!" Kaylie exclaimed, "your eyes dilate when he is around." Fuck.

They giggle at me, as I rolled my eyes. "Alright let me finish harvesting and plowing, then we can head home." They nodded and I headed off to do just that.  They chatted away, as their voice became silent from the distance.

•three hours later•

"Alright, let's get gone" my southern voice thick, as we load up. The sun was gone and the stars coming out. "I'm off tomorrow, surprisingly. I usually don't do day offs." I said turning in my streets. "Really?" Kaylie asked "Yeah, I rather make enough money as I can." I answered. We parked, got out, and went inside.  We were handed a warm meal. "Thank you, ma'am." Kaylie and Ame said. My mom smiled warmly at them, "call me mom." They smiled and nodded.

I'm literally covered in grime and filth, eating food. "I'm gonna go shower." I say finishing my food. I get up and go to my room, grabbing pajamas and went and took a forty minute shower. When I came back down, they were in the guest room sleeping. "Thanks mom." I say nodding my head back towards the guest room. "You're welcome! I wouldn't be a southern person, if I didn't help out now would I?" She mentioned smiling. "No, ma'am. That's what I like about the south." She chuckled. I grabbed a coke and downed it.

"Night mom." I headed up to my room. I laid down putting my phone on charge. I'm glad Sunday is my day off, at least I get to sleep in more. I turned over and went to sleep.
