As Ty Lee approached her house she could see steam coming from the kitchen window, as the warmth from her mums cooking was escaping and evaporating in the ice cold air. Her house was small but there was only 4 of them and it was enough. Her family isn't rich or highly respected, in fact a lot of people frowned upon her family because she and her brother were never smart or got good grades, and her brother got mixed up in the wrong crowds, displaying all kinds of anti-social behaviour. He plays loud music all night which drives the neighbours crazy, he stays out sometimes until early morning and hangs around with the wrong people. Parents who can't control their children are weak and are blamed entirely for their children's actions. But Ty lee couldn't have wished for better parents. They were kind and loving in everyway.
"Evening sweet pea."
"Hi mum." Ty lee said as she came through the front door.
"How was school today?" Her mum asked.
"It was okay. What you cooking?" She asked as she walked into the kitchen.
"Chow mein noodle stir fry. It's nearly ready actually." She replied as she stirred the stir fry in the sizzling pan. Ty lee walked into the open living room where her father was sitting watching TV.
"Hey appa." She said and kissed his forehead. "How's your back today?"
"Hi pumpkim."he said as he repositioned his glasses on the bridge of his nose. "It's the same as yesterday." He chuckled. "It will pass soon." Her father was getting old and fragile, he's been taking more and more days off work and her mum is worried he will have to retire soon and all funds will stop.
"Is changkyun home yet?"
"Yes he's upstairs in his lair as usual." Her mum tightened her apron a bit more behind her back. "That boy bunked his last lessons today. When will he sort himself out." She said before swiping her short black bob hair behind her ear and continue to stir. "Anyway, go and get changed honey and wash up for dinner."
"Ty lee grabbed her bag up the stairs to her room, making a thud every time her bag hit a step. She glanced at her brothers room at the end of the hall upstairs, where the door was open the slightest bit and she could hear his loud music. She walked over to his door and stood outside for a moment. He annoyed her unbelievably with with his inconsideration for their parents and family welfare, his disrespective attitude and general laziness around the house. But still she cared for him and often worried what was going on with him. She missed the laughs they had together as siblings, she even missed the fights because now he doesn't even interact with her. They were inseparable once, but he wouldn't speak to anyone now. She shut her eyes for a moment. She really wanted to see him, speak to him, but he wasn't the same anymore. She sighed and walked back to her room.
She chucked her bag onto her desk chair and jumped onto her bed with her arms and legs spread wide. She stared at her ceiling for a moment as she embraced the sensation of the cold fresh sheets beneath her after a long and eventful day. She thought about all the work she had to do, but she had so much that she didn't even know where to start. "Ugh" she sighed as she pulled out her phone to kill time and procrastinate a little more. Eventually she sat up with a sigh after throwing her phone to the end of the bed.
When she had changed into her comfortable clothes, she came downstairs for dinner, and half way down the stairs she called for her brother. "Changkyun! Dinner's ready come on!" He didn't reply. She rolled her eyes and made her way to the table where she sat to eat with her mum and dad.
"What did you do at school today hun?" Her mum asked as Ty lee played with her noodles.
"Nothing much" she said as she picked at the peppers in her food. She hated peppers.
"Really?" her mum asked as if she knew something.
"Yes really." Ty lee stood her ground and continued to deny that anything interesting happened at school.
"So u wanna tell me why your blazer is soaked and you have blue stains everywhere." She gestured to the side of her neck hinting that Ty lee had blue marks in the same place.
"Mum it was nothing!" Ty lee started to defend herself straight away.
"Don't lie to me Ty lee." Her mother said sternly. "Who was it this time?" Ty lee sulked with her head hanging over her bowl in shame.
"It was Soyeon again. She threw her slushie over Suju today at lunch." She said. Her mum looked hurt by the story, it can't be easy for a mother to know her child was being bullied and this was definitely not the first time she had heard of it. She placed her chopsticks down on the table.
"That's it I'm ringing the school first thing tomorrow."
"No mum please! It will only make it worse! Dad tell her!" Ty lee sprung from her seat.
No your mother is right Ty lee. This has gone too far." Her dad said.
"Please no! You have no idea what they will do!" Ty lee shouted.
"They wont do anything with the schools help." Her mum replied.
"The school don't give a shit omma! They act like they do but they don't ! Theres over 3000 students in that school. How do u expect them to defend and protect every child from being bullied every time a worried mum rings!"
"Watch your language young lady. I wont take that attitude from your brother and i will most certainly not take it from you." Her mum retaliaed.
"Ugh" Ty lee pushed her bowl away from her and hunched back in her seat. "He gets away with everything." She muttered under her breath.
"Thats it! Go to your room!" Her dad yelled.
"But appa!"
"No. Go now." He commanded. She got up and stomped upstairs to her room, passing her brother on the way up, who was actually out of his room for once.
"Changkyun?" She asked as if she was hallucinating, but he just barged past to the front door while throwing his hoodie on.
" omma, oppa, I'm going out!" He shouted.
"Wait changkyun, whe-" their mum called from the dining room but was interrupted by the front door slamming behind him. Ty lee rolled her eyes.
"Are you kidding me!" She shouted, followed by a loud groan as she stormed up the rest of the stairs, stomping the rest of the way.
