The secret
Chapter 1: New start and New faces
~Tara's POV~
It has been years since the attack but the horrible nightmares still haut my dreams. Things have changed now that I have Hannah. She helps me through those terrible nights and many other things. But one thing she can't help me with, one thing she can never find out about is that I may be going crazy. I have been hearing this voice in my head for a day or two now and I think I'm going crazy. It's a girls voice but not mine. I just hope 'the voice' goes away.
'Would you quit calling me that?'
There it is again, that voice in the back of my mind! I don't know what it is, or if it's normal...I mean, does this happen to every 16 year old, and do they have a 'voice' too?
'Didn't I say to stop?!' She growled.
'Shut up!' I snapped at her.
I tried my best to ignore her and continue walking. I was coming close to the edge of our old brick school now; it's not much just a two story building high school with classrooms and hard teachers. A thought crossed my mind. I should tell Hannah. She might know what it means. I rounded the corner of our school and spotted our almost invisible trail. If you were walking around by it you probably wouldn't see it unless you were looking for it, like I was. I walked up it, with my dark purple school bag bouncing on my right shoulder. About fifteen minutes of walking through the woods following the trail I began to see our small front yard, then Hannah and I's house. It's small, white and has a rap around Wooden porch with about six windows, along with a black shingle roof. It is one story with two rooms, one bathroom, living room and a kitchen, there is a back door and a front door as well. The back door leads to a nice little multi-colored tile patio with a small fish pond about fifteen feet from the edge of our patio. Since Hannah and I are the only ones living in it, it's the perfect size. I walked along our small stone pathway to the front door, on the way to the door, I stopped to talk to Hannah. She was sitting in the grass looking at her medium sized garden left of the stone pathway. When I approached she looked up and smiled, realizing it was me. Her electric blue eyes stared at me warily through her blond hair. I gave her a reassuring smile and she frowned, worry clouding her eyes. Her shoulder length hair swayed in the wind, as did my dark brown hair.
"There's something bothering you. What is it?" She asked.
I grabbed a piece of my amber highlights and started to play with it. A nervous habit that I don't do very often, only when I'm tired. She motioned for me to sit down and I did, careful to not sit on the dirt. Hannah cleared her throat, and I finally realized that she was waiting for me to answer.
'Tell her already!' The voice yelled.
I flinched at how loud it was.
"Hannah," I began. "I don't know what's wrong with me. I have been hearing voices-well one voice-in my head and I think I'm going crazy!" I explained.
Her eyebrows were raised and she wasn't looking at me-or rather anyone,- her face was emotionless, blank even. My hand reached out to touch her arm but instead I was tackled with what seemed like half hug half 'pin-you-down-on-the-floor' thing.
"Me too!" She shrieked. "Nothing I do shuts her up! Mine has a name, does yours?" She said happily. I smiled, relief slowly replacing worry as she got off me.
"I don't know...let me ask her." I replied.
'Do you have a name?' I asked. I instantly felt stupid. I'm talking to a voice in my head!
'Yes, Mackenzie, Mack for short. I am you wolf. I will explain more, but you need to tell Hannah first.' Her voice slowly faded from annoyance in the beginning to awe when she mentioned Hannah. I smiled, she cares for Hannah just as much as I do.
On top of the sudden happiness I also felt a pang of surprise. A wolf? The 'voic-' I cut myself off. Mack is a wolf? But..how?
'I said I will explain. Tell Hannah.' She laughed.
"She says her name is Mackenzie, Mack for short. She is my wolf.." I half expected Hannah to run but she didn't move. Her eyes were glassy and she didn't seem to have heard me. I was about to call out her name but Mack stopped me.
'She is talking to her inner animal. Her's is a Horse named Sky. This may seem weird, talking to a 'voice' in your head, but it is perfectly normal. Tara, you and Hannah are Shifters. Since your parents were alphas, power is in your blood. Seeing as you don't know much I will explain further. Sons or Daughters of Alphas shift earlier than normal. Other wolf shifters not born with alpha genes, however, will not. They normally meet their wolf at 17 also but they shift at 20 or 21. That is when they find their mates. You, meet your wolf at age 17 and see it at the time of your 18th birthday. You will find your mate then, as well. A mate is like a wolfs' other half. Like a soul mate. Wolves cannot live without their mates. A mate is the most important thing to a wolf.' She explained. Her voice took a new tone when she spoke of mates. She quieted and went to the back of my mind. I can't believe that I actually understand her. Hannah was looking at the woods now, straight of our house.
"Hannah, won't this be fun? The wolf and horse. Mack and Sky. Me and you!" I squealed. Mack was laughing at me.
'Don't get ahead of yourself. Neither of you have shifted yet.' She chuckled.
I rolled my eyes, laughing at her. Hannah looked at me confused then smiled too.
"She filled you in? Ok, good. I'm so excited too!" She stood up, wiping off the dirt off her dark jeans. I watched her curiously as she walked over to the porch and grab a chair. I didn't move, I just sat there and watched her drag the chair off the porch and over to me. I stood up to go help when she shouted,
"No I got it! Sit back down." I gave her a 'are you kidding?' look. I was not sitting down in dirt while she was in a chair. I wiped the dirt off my ripped black jeans and walked over to her. She set the chair down.
"Let's just go inside. I'm not gonna sit on the ground while you sit in a comfy chair." I started to walk past her when I heard a annoyed huff.
"But its so nice out..fine." She picked up the chair and we walked back to the house. I followed her laughing. When she turned to me I busted out laughing so hard that my laugh became silent. Her face was scrunched up in a look that said, 'why are you laughing you psycho.' Soon she started giggling And my laugh started to died down some. We entered the house and took off out shoes and headed to her room. Her room was a light shade of pink and has a queen sized bed with a wooden headboard. She walked over and say on her window seal. I followed and sat at her mahogany colored desk.
"Your birthday is in two days, Tara...you'll meet your wolf! I can't wait till I see my horse." She went on and on, we eventually got on the topic if her. Somehow.
"Your birthday was a couple of days ago Hannah. You should shift soon." She nodded, lost in thought. Then Hannah wanted to turn the subject around.
"What do you want for your birthday?" She asked eyeing my face. I'm not the one for gifts, but when It comes to Hannah I'm all for it. She gives the best ones. One year she took me to the zoo for a present, because I love animals. That was a fun day. I smiled at the memory. But, her question caught me off guard. It had me thinking for a while. I couldn't think if anything. Hannah yawned and I stood up.
"I'll let you sleep. I don't know what I want. I'm sure you'll come up with something. Your great at that. Night." I walked out and over to my room and pulled out my favorite baby blue pajama pants and a random blue shirt. I took off my socks and crawled into my bed, staring at my blue walls thinking of this crazy day.
