Chapter 2

The next day...

Kaelyn POV

I went to Riker's locker this morning. But he wasn't here yet. So I just sort of awkwardly waited for him.

But soon enough, I saw him walking towards me with a smile on his face.

"Hey!" He said, taking his backpack off.

"Hi. Why'd you want me to meet you here?"

"I have something for you."

"You do?"

"Yeah! So... My mom loves baking. And she made chocolate chip cookies last night. They're so good! So I thought I'd bring you some!"

He pulled a bag out of his backpack that had 2 chocolate chip cookies in it, and he handed it to me.

"Oh... Thanks, Riker."

"You're welcome! Let's get to class."

I walked with Riker to class.

Later...

Riker POV

"So I know I helped you with your make up work yesterday. But then my mom needed me to come home for dinner. I never got a chance to help you unpack, so... I was just wondering if you wanted me to come over today and help you unpack," I said, watching Kaelyn eat the cookies I gave her.

"Um... Well... If you come over, I need you to sneak in the window again. But if you want to, then yeah, I'd love some help unpacking."

"Ok, cool! We can walk together."

I was really happy Kaelyn wanted to hang out. I wanted to get to know her, and if I could do that while helping her out by unpacking stuff in her bedroom, then that's awesome!

I snuck in through her window just like last time. She had boxes all around her room, but everything seemed organized.

"Ok, so if you just want to tell me what to do and where to put things, I can help."

"Ok. I mean, maybe we should start off with clothes. If you can just hand me stuff, I can hang it up in my closet."

"Ok."

Later...

Kaelyn POV

After a few hours, Riker and I got my whole room unpacked.

I was so happy because now I felt a lot less stressed out. It's stressful enough just living here with my parents.

"Kaelyn! Get out here!" My dad yelled.

"Stay here and be quiet," I told Riker.

I left my room and went to the kitchen. That's usually where my dad hangs out.

"What?" I asked.

"You haven't been helping out around the house enough. Do you know how much work still needs to be done around here? There are a ton of boxes to unpack! What have you been doing? Sitting on your butt in your bedroom?"

"No, I've been doing homework and unpacking my own room."

"Well the family needs to come before yourself. We own this house, and we let you live here. We pay for your food, and clothes, and water. You need to start showing some responsibility around here."

"I'm sorry. I had a lot of schoolwork to do to catch up."

"I don't care! This family comes first! Now go unpack some boxes!"

"Ok..."

I went back to my bedroom.

"Everything ok?" Riker whispered.

"Yeah. Completely fine. You need to go, though."

"Ok. I'll see you tomorrow?"

"Yeah."

"Ok. Bye!"

"Bye, Riker."

He climbed out my window. I went to go unpack boxes in my house so I wouldn't get myself into more trouble.

The next day...

Riker POV

I forgot to text Kaelyn and tell her to meet me at my locker this morning. So I couldn't talk to her until lunch since we had class.

But now it was lunch, and I was glad.

Kaelyn sat down next to me at the end of the table. My friends have been picking on me for the past few days for talking to Kaelyn and stuff. They're saying I'm in love and just teasing me. But I'm just blowing them off because I don't really care. I know what it's like to be a new student at a new school, so I just want to make her feel like she has someone.

Something seemed weird with her today though.

"Hey. Are you alright?" I asked.

She nodded, not looking at me. She went on her phone, and barely paid any attention to me. I was kind of confused. But maybe she's having a bad day...?

"So um... Did you want to hang out after school today? You could come over my house if you want to," I said, trying to make conversation.

"I can't."

"Oh... Ok..."

I was starting to think maybe she didn't like me. Did I do something? I didn't think I did... But girls are complicated. So I don't know...

She didn't even eat lunch. She just did stuff on her phone the whole time.

I seriously didn't know what was up with her today. I couldn't stop worrying that I did something.

But I ended up coming to a conclusion. And that was that if she didn't like me for some reason, she probably wouldn't be sitting at my table. So... she's probably just having a bad day. And I decided to just give her some space. I still barely know her, so I didn't really feel comfortable trying to ask her what was wrong or pushing her about it.

So... I'm just hoping for a better day tomorrow.
