I sigh as I take another table's order. So far I've made about $10.00 in tips, which isn't too bad for now.

"I'll have a bacon burger with some french fries." The man smiles, handing me his menu. I smile and write down the order, taking the menu from his hands. I turn to the woman.

"And you, ma'am?" She gives me a polite smile as she looks through her menu once more to make sure she knows what she wants.

"I'll have the chicken sandwich, nothing on it please." I nod as I take her menu as well.

"Anything else?"

"No thanks. We're good." I nod and inform them that their food should be done soon before heading back to the kitchen. I put the order on the rack we put them on for the chefs to make.

"Long day?" I hear Alex ask from beside me. I nod and she smiles gently. "I'm sorry. Your shift's almost over, though. Then you can go home."

"Yay." I roll my eyes. I'd rather be at work than at home.

"Hey now, be grateful you have a place to live. Some people don't get that." Giving me a pointed look, she puts her tables' orders on the rack.

Alex's family was homeless for a long time. Now Alex takes on three jobs along with online school, just so she can provide for her mother and two brothers. Her father left after her mother's condition was revealed and he realised he couldn't make enough money to cover the medical bills. I try my best to help them pay it off, but I have to provide for myself and my two parents, so I can't really do anything about it.

"I know, I know. I just— You know how my parents are." I sigh, slowly making my way out of the kitchen.

"Yeah. Just a few more months and you'll be able to leave, though." I smile at her attempt at keeping things upbeat.

"But then what will I do? I won't have a high school diploma, how will I get a job that can provide a home for me?"

"Someday soon that kazooing career will take off." She winks, a joking smile on her face. I laugh.

"That's right, I forgot about that." Smiling, I walk around the counter and rest my elbows against the cold surface.

"We had the best ideas as 8 year old kids, didn't we?" A soft smile forms on her face as she remembers how innocent we were back then. Oh how time has changed for the both of us.

"We definitely did." My eyes drop down to my hands as we stand in silence for a few minutes. "Hey, I've gotta go now though. My parents are probably waiting." I speak quietly, trying not to break the silence too violently.

"Right. See you tomorrow." She sighs and turns around, walking back towards the kitchen where her orders were now ready.

"Don't have too much fun while I'm gone, yeah?" I joke, trying to lighten the mood. She laughs and nods, opening the door and walking away.

Time to go home, I guess.

I smile as I hear the crowd counting down along with the counter on the big screen, desperately awaiting our arrival onstage. Yes, we'd already been at this for years, but it still has this effect on me. There's something beautiful about people meeting each other and becoming friends with one another through a mutual liking of a specific thing. It brings people close together.

Show time, I get ready to perform at my best by getting in the starting pose.

Just then, I hear the audience scream over the mechanical whirl of our platforms being shot upwards.

Let's make this a great one, girls!

Sighing, I enter the house I live in.

"Where have you been?" I hear my father yell from the couch in the living room, a beer bottle in his hand.

"At work."

"Work? Ha. You? Work? You're lying."

"I promise I'm not. I made enough money to buy us dinner for tonight." I say, hanging up my jacket and pocketing the money I made. "Where's Mom?"

"Upstairs." He grunts, turning back to his game. I sigh and make my way upstairs, knowing exactly what my mom was up to.

"Mom?" Knocking quietly, I hear shuffling from the other side before the door opens.

"What do you want?" She breathes smoke into my face, making me internally cringe. If I'm going to die anytime soon, it would be from second hand smoke.

"I'm going to go buy us stuff to make dinner, what do you want?" I ask politely, hoping she'd lighten up a bit.

"A perfect daughter." I'm faced with the door slamming in my face. Ouch.

"Pizza it is." I sigh.
