Jasmine

I was in the hospital for longer than I had planned. Actually, nothing that happened was planned.

The baby had entirely stopped breathing. They had to do an emergency c-section, but because I wasn't that far along there were slim chances of the baby making it. She was in the NICU for a few days, but didn't make it.

A mothers worst nightmare.

That's the only way to sum it up. I cried for several days about it. I couldn't help it. I lost my baby before I even got to hold her. A piece of me left with her. At least my baby was in a better place. She was getting better at first and I really thought my baby girl was going to make it, but then she decided she just wasn't ready for the world.

Calvin was a lot more devastated than I thought he would be. Considering it wasn't his child and there was no bonding time or anything, I didn't feel like it would hit him as hard. Maybe the most he would be hurt feeling over was that I would be in my feelings. He proved me completely wrong. He was waiting for a chance to get to witness a kid grow up, teaching them things, looking up to him. He was going to have that opportunity one day though, with or without me.

I turned over to Calvin, who was scrolling through twitter, "Hey babe, let's go do something today."

"Like what?"

I shrugged, "Park I guess."

He smiled and got up, "I'll go get Layce ready. Oooh, and wait, I forgot today is Chance's cookout, wear something that you don't mind being in all day. And grab ya swimsuit, he's got the pool up."

I laughed and walked over to the bathroom to brush my teeth. I stopped and stared at the bathtub, picturing Layce splashing around when she was a baby. I missed that and was looking forward to that again. Just experiencing everything again. It was a good thing we hadn't actually told Layce everything, telling her she was getting a sibling, then it not happening would have broke her heart. She's always saying she wants a sister to dress up like her baby dolls.

I tossed my stuff into the dirty clothes and slipped into some black leggings and one of Calvin's red, plaid button up shirts. I put on some mascara and eyeliner, nothing much, but enough to accent my eyes. I threw my hair into a bun because I didn't feel like trying to fix my hair. It was straight currently, but the humidity had it on edge.

"Mommy we're ready why aren't you? Let's gooo." Layce's voice sang out as Calvin carried her around the corner.

"She looks pretty ready to me." Calvin laughed.

"No she not, where her shoes at?" We all laughed as I slipped on some sandals. "Mommy, Calvin said we can get some ice cream. Can we, can we, can we? Pweaaaassseeeee?"

I laughed, "We'll see."

We all went and got in the car. Usually we'd walk to the park since it's just a few blocks up, but we were staying until it was time to go to Chance's house.

Calvin

We got to Chance's house after a long day at the park. It was a nice atmosphere going at his house. He lives in this huge ass house out in the city. It's always a good time at his house.

Everyone who was already there was outback, so we went and joined them.

"Aye wassup, Cal!?" Chance said. He was messing with some food on the grill. He turned around and dapped me, then gave Jasmine a hug.

Layce had warmed up to Chance the first time she met him, so she ran to him.

"Hey baby girl." he said, squeezing her tight.

Jasmine had saw one of her friends here so she walked off talking to her. They were sitting on some seats by the pool, just hanging out. I started helping Chance getting the tables set up, and Layce had ran off with some other little kids that were there.

"You always having cookouts for no reason." I laughed.

"But you always here, so shut up."

We both started laughing. He wasn't lying. Anytime he had a cookout or get together, I was there. We had the best times in groups like this.

"Uncle Chance, can we get in the pool now?" Andrew asked.

Chance's brother, Taylor, walked over after him, "Drew, we don't just come over to Uncle Chance's house for his pool, at least say hey first, damn."

We all started laughing.

"Um, yes we do. Hey Uncle Chance, how 'bout that swim?"

Chance nodded. Andrew was the sassiest eight year old boy there was, but he was also the funniest and sweetest thing there was.

We all stood around talking for a little while, the rest of the kids ended up swimming too, and then the girls mostly laid around sunbathing.

Finally the food was ready and we all ate. Chance went all out with food, he probably had more selections of food than a buffet.

"So ya birthday is coming up.." I started, looking towards Chance. I wasn't really sure where I was going, but I was trying to start another conversation.

"Hell yeah brah, clothes, money, bitches. Watch out, it's all coming my way."

I laughed, "What, is this the family friendly version of your birthday party?" I was referring to the atmosphere of the cookout. Family friendly for sure. Kid friendly, whatever you wanted to say. The music was chill, nothing too provoking.

He laughed and popped open a beer.

"Sort of. The liquor isn't really friendly."

"But what's a cookout without alcohol?" He cheesed and we sat back on the couch.

Everyone had started eating wherever they could. A lot of the guys were around the living room watching the game.

It was about 3 am, and we had just gotten home. The night ended with the kids slowly falling asleep around the house, and we'd move them to a room in the back where it was quieter. Then we changed the music tone and brought out the poker tables.

As much fun as I had, I was definitely ready to hit the sheets after a long night. A night that was really needed after everything that's been happening lately.
