(sunday the 10th)
"I finished," I said, walking into Roman's room one evening about a week later.
"With everything?" he asked. I nodded. He smirked. "I knew it wouldn't take that long. Got a good understanding of it now?" I nodded quickly. He stood up from his bed after closing his book. "Good, cause now that you've got your head wrapped around it, there's something important I need to tell you." I stood there listening. He crouched down to see me eye to eye. "You can't stay here." I just looked back at him with a blank stare on my face. "If you've read all of the information, you'll know why. It's just not safe. This is a breakthrough in technology, and others will want in. The government has you on file and they know all about the first time you used your powers. They're gonna come here sooner or later. You can't stay here." I didn't question.
"Okay," I said. "So now what?" He smiled.
"I get to take you to the garage."
"The garage?" I asked. "What's that?"
"Well, you can't stay here anymore, so you need a new home" he said. I was surprised at his straightforwardness. Usually, when people say something like: you're going to be leaving the only home you've ever known, they try to soften the blow. He didn't. Maybe it was because he knew I wouldn't mind.
"So do I just pack up my things then?" I asked, trying to imagine what life would be like away from here.
"You don't have to," he said. "Everything you will need is there. We've spent the past few months making it ready to move into." I didn't ask who 'we' was. "If you want to take something, feel free, but you don't need to pack everything. I've already told uncle. He knows we're going."
"We?" I asked. "You're coming too?"
"Of course," he said. "I wouldn't let you live all alone." I brightened up a bit at the thought. once I thought about it, I was kind of glad that we'd be leaving. Uncle would be glad too. I smiled and followed Roman back out to his car. We got in and started driving. I sat in the passenger seat, like always, staring out the window and watching where we went. We went down lots of new roads I had never seen before. I had already started to try to memorize the route, but it was too long. It was about half an hour before we were there. Neither of us said anything the whole time. When we reached the place, he stopped and shut off the car.
"Come on," he said, getting out and walking towards the place. We were standing in front of the garage. It wasn't really a garage, it was more of a building that looked like a mix between a house and a storage unit. The exterior wasn't too bad. It had a nice lawn and was surrounded by a vast empty land for miles. There were patches of forest surrounding the house, but there were no others houses. I wasn't sure what to expect as I entered, but was surprised by the interior. When we first walked in, we were met by a thick, cream colored, shag carpet. This was what covered the living room floor and met the stone kitchen floors. The living room had a table, a television, and a couple of couches. The kitchen was on the right of that. It had stone floors and counters around the walls. There was a fridge, an oven, a microwave, a sink, and a dishwasher. There were cupboards lining the tops of the walls. There was an island in the middle of the kitchen with a few chairs pushed up to it. The room was well lit with a few yellow lights hanging over the island.
It was cozy and nice. After looking around, I realized that I wouldn't mind living here.
"I'll show you your room," he said, taking me down a hallway. There were five doors here: three on the right and two on the left. He took me down to the end of the hallways and opened the door to the one on the right. Inside was my room. The walls were gray, the hard wood floors were a dark brown, and there was a hammock hanging from the ceiling. There was a closet on one of the walls.
Other than that, the room was pretty empty.
"You can decorate for yourself, if you'd like," he said. "I didn't do much with it cause I thought you would want to." I smiled at the thought of what I was going to do with this place.
"My room's down the hall," he said. "And there's a bathroom across the walkway." With that, he left. I stood in the middle of my room, looking around. After a minute or two, I went out to find Roman.
I found him in the kitchen, eating ice cream out of the bucket.
"This is great," I said. "I wouldn't mind living here." He nodded and continued to shovel ice cream.
"Oh, and there are some house rules you need to know," he said without looking up from his food.
"Oh?" I asked.
"Yeah," he said. "Just a few simple things."
"Shoot," I said, crossing my arms. I wasn't ever excited about rules, and he knew that, but I guess it would be something I would have to live with.
"First off, no leaving the house without telling me," he said. "There are NO exceptions. You will tell me if you are leaving." I nodded. It couldn't be too hard to follow. "Second," he said. "No touching my computer or any of my flash drives." I nodded monotonously. "Another rule, you have to be home by ten: EVERY night." I sighed and nodded. There wasn't much I could do about it. "And you might not be the only one here," he said. "There is another like you, as I had said. And she and her sister might be staying here when she finds her powers."
"Sydney," I said without thinking. He looked up.
"What?" he asked.
"Her name's Sydney, right? You had mentioned her name before. You two go to college together and work together. She has a sister?" He sighed.
"Yeah," he said. "Her sister will find her powers in time. Until then, she can't know. So don't go trying to find her." I nodded. It seemed reasonable.
"I'm going off to college, I'm late as it is" he said, putting the ice cream back in the freezer. "Oh, and Sydney will be with us for dinner tonight. I just thought you'd want to know." With that, he turned to leave.
"Are you two in love?" I asked. He smiled and glanced back at me.
"Something like that."
