CHAPTER ONE
BOOZE
________________________________________________________
Sophia huffed from her spot behind the register, looking around the almost deserted convenience store. It was just herself, some packet of chips, many different beverages and a busty female cop. Great. She squinted her eyes at the woman before coming to the conclusion that they were fake and looked away. She had another 5 hours left, granted she only just clocked on...but it felt like she'd been there forever. A woman walked in, the bell above the door jingling causing her to look up and give her an awkward tight lipped smiled before looking away again. Sophia's gaze wandered over to window and she began watching the world go by. It didn't take long for muffled hip hop to make its way to her ears as a beat up, small, silver car pulled into the carpark. Being the sticky-beak she was, she looked at the passengers inside and noticed two boys around her age. She scoffed, already knowing what they were trying to do. She wasn't dumb. She had even done it herself a couple times not to mention she knew about the senior only party that was happening later tonight. She went last year but wasn't too into it so decided to skip this year. Carter hopped out of the passenger seat, wearing a backwards snapback and a...boy scout uniform. She waited for him to enter and try to fake his way into buying some beer but was surprised when he moved away from the door and out of her sight. She looked back at the other boy but quickly looked away as they made eye contact, flicking her bangs. It was a habit she picked up as soon as she got them earlier that year. The officer then came up to her and they gave each other forced smiles.
"Just this thanks," she placed a bottle of coke on the counter and looked away as Sophia scanned it.
"That'll be $2.50," The bell jingled and she was surprised to see the drunken homeless man who normally sat on the concrete outside. She knew he didn't have any money but she didn't want to seem rude and question him about it. The cop gave her the money, a nod and then exited the store. She watched her go by, noticing snapback boy standing their as eyes focused on the woman's every step. Ew. She scoffed and watched the homeless man as he made a series of incomprehensible sounds and gurgles. He was picking up all sorts of things that he didn't need like ice block moulds, sandwich bags and a pool noodle. She shook her head as the door rang but when she looked at who entered, she couldn't but squeal. The two girls looked at each other and beamed.
"Denise!"
"Sophia!" the said register lady practically jumped over the counter and gave the older girl a tight hug which was instantly returned.
The boys stared in awe and wonder as they watched the two from inside the beat up car, Carter gasping, "Dude, no way!"
"What?"
"Holy shit, man! That's them."
"Who?! What?"
"Denise...what's-her-name and your babe!" Ben looked at the two girls watching them talk to each other.
