CHAPTER TWO
ZOMBIES
__________________________________________________________
"I can't believe this," Sophia grumbled to herself as she tapped away at her phone. It was 10pm and she was suppose to finish work 2 hours ago. However when the time came for her to clock off, the person who would normally take over the rest of the shift, Glenn, never turned up. She tried calling him a few times but it always went to voice mail. She didn't want to leave the store unattended unlike the voice in the back of her mind telling her, "It's not your store. Who cares if everything gets stolen? It was suppose to be Glenn's shift anyways". But the angel on her right shoulder just couldn't let her do that. Whoop-de-freaking-doo.
"I'm so demanding extra pay for this," she continued to grumble before putting her phone in her back pocket. She had half an hour left until the store closed, meaning it was about time to get everything ready for the next day. Moving around the counter and into the storage room, she grabbed a large box of items and began restocking the shelves. 30 original chips here, 30 salt and vinegar chips there, 30 Cheetos down below and 30 Doritos up top. It took her roughly 10 minutes to restock everything necessary before she moved over to the door, making sure to switch the open sign off and locking the sliding doors in case anyone decided to walk in anyways. As she moved back to her iconic spot behind the counter and began shutting everything down, a loud thump at the doors caused her to jump. Her startled gaze looked up and fell upon a man trying to get into the store.
"Sir, we're closed!" she tried to make sure he could hear her through the glass before she continued what she was doing, thinking the man would leave. But the thumping continued.
"We're closed!" the man then began licking the window causing her to grimace, "Don't do that! Hey! Stop!"
The man continued licking for a moment until he decided to try and walk through the doors, his head repeatedly smacking into the glass. Sophia growled to herself and grabbed her phone from her pocket.
"I'll call the police!" he proceeded to ignore her and at that point Sophia decided that enough was enough. Quickly dialing 9-1-1, she waited for the phone to connect but instead received three beeps in return and the call ending. Pulling her phone away from her ear, she looked at the device in confusion before noticing that there was no service.
"What?" she looked towards the man again, expecting to see him still standing by the door, but was surprised to see he had left. Maybe she managed to scare him off. She stared at the spot for a moment longer before putting her phone back in her pocket and continuing the remainder of the closing process. Once she was certain everything was done, she went to move out from behind the register when one of the glass doors shattered into pieces. She was too shocked to make a sound and harshly jolted in her spot, feeling her bones ache afterwards. She frantically looked at the doors, the first thing she noticed was the glass, the second was a long and thick trail of blood smudged across the tile floors and the third was something she would never be able to un-see. The man from earlier laid motionless on the floor, the blood obviously coming from him, and Sophia was stunned by his appearance. She never noticed when he was outside in the dark, but now it was the only thing she could see. The whole left side of his throat looked as though it had been ripped out, the back of his right calf having been mauled in the exact same way minus some bone peaking through. Her hands instantly flew to her mouth in a mixture of emotions. Shock, disgust, fear and maybe even a small amount of trauma. She went to reach for her phone again, this time going to ring an ambulance, when the man started groaning.
"Oh my god! You're alive!" she blurted out as her eyes nearly bulged out of her head. She ran around the counter and crouched down to his side, "Sir? Sir, what happened?!".
He was silent for a moment, his body twitching involuntarily. Suddenly his whole body lurched for the girl, his teeth bared like a mad dog and a guttural shout that could have snapped his vocal chords. Sophia screamed and jumped back causing her butt to make contact with the floor. She didn't have time to process what was happening as the man continued advancing at her. His hand made an appearance this time, flinging around uncontrollably as he tried to get a grip on her. When he got too close, Sophia screamed again and did the first thing that came to her mind. Her boot created a sickening crack as she kicked him in the head. She watched as his head snapped back with another a crack and before she could blink she was up on her feet. Her stare remained unmoving as the man slowly got up causing her to run back behind the counter, grabbing the shotgun tapped beneath it. It was placed there by the owners after a few breaks in and a mild robbery and each of the workers were permitted to use it only in the case of an emergency. In this instance, Sophia decided it was safe enough to call her situation an emergency. She quickly clicked it open making sure the bullets where in it before snapping it shut and cocking it ready for use. She raised the deadly weapon at the crazed man.
"Sir, I need you to back the fuck up," she spoke calmly yet firmly and glared at the man who tilted his head at her. In a split second he snapped again and tried to launch himself over the counter, aiming to attack her, and without a second thought she pulled the trigger. It was if it were a reflex. The man fell down at her feet with a big whole in the centre of his chest and when he went to make another move, she fired again making sure to get his skull this time. Blood was splattered everywhere, it pooled at her feet, painted her legs and the space around them, some had even managed to splash up onto her face. It took several seconds until Sophia could fully process everything that happened in the span of 2 minutes. A dead man laid at her feet. A dead man that was dead before she killed him. He died, twice, but he kept coming back. She pulled the trigger, twice, but only when his brain was burst into tiny pieces did he actually stay dead. Then a thought popped into her head. A stupid, ridiculous thought that could never, should never, be plausible.
"He was a fucking zombie?!"
Sophia put the gun on the table, her hands instantly shoving themselves into her hair and tugging at the strands. She wanted to pace, but it was in the way. Without a second glance, she took an overly exaggerated step over him and made her way to the opposite side of the counter where it couldn't be seen. She thought it over in her head. What do I do?! If she told anyone, they'd think she had completely lost her mind. She might even be locked up. Her self defense excuse, which wasn't an excuse and actually happened, being tossed out the window as soon as the word 'zombie' came out of her mouth. What if they did believe her? Maybe someone else had seen it too? Maybe there were more zombies. What if there was a fucking apocalypse?! Right now! At this very moment! And she was only just now realising it. A face then popped into the for front of her mind, their name quickly following suit, and she nearly ran out the door. But not before grabbing the gun again and reaching over the counter for the spare bullets. She didn't even bother unlocking the sliding doors as she ran, deciding to go through the massive whole the thing had created. She didn't even bother looking at her surroundings as she just darted across the road and through the unattended door into 'Lawrence of Alabia'. Her main priority being Denise.
