"No, Charlotte, just put your foot here!" Finn grabs my right ankle and tugs it towards the side of the horse.
"I'm not tall enough for this!" I gasp, stretching to stick my toes into the metal rings.
"I'm basically a centimetre taller than you, and I can do this. Did I tell you about the time I fell off that horse? His name is Thunder, because sometimes he rides super fast and he likes to be rough. Don't be worried, though!" Finn mounts his own horse, a tan stallion with a white, silky mane.
One thing I've noticed is that none of their horses are actually dirty.
"Gee, Finn, that really helps. Thank you for informing me that I'm going to die on this horse." I tighten my grip on the leather reigns.
"We've been practicing with the ponies for awhile, and all you have to do is go in a complete circle to get a golden sticker!" He talks like a game show host, and I try not to laugh, because I'm trying my hardest to look stern.
"Alright. Don't be surprised if I run away screaming, though." I sigh, mumbling. The horse I'm riding looks like a Mustang, but I'm not educated enough to know the real kind. It's completely black, and looks silky and sleek, like somebody dumped a bucket of black oil all over a white horse. I have no idea why somebody would be that cruel, though. It has warm, but also steely black eyes and is larger. Finn is actually riding a larger horse than I am.
"What is the name of your horse?" I ask. Curiosity has always been my downfall.
"I named it myself. This little baby is called Starbucks!" He proudly puffs out his chest, patting the stallion on the side comfortingly.
I give Finn a look. "What?"
He grins and leans forward on his horse. "Let's see if you can put your skills to the test."
I sigh. "Here goes nothing."☁︎☁︎☁︎☁︎☁︎☁︎☁︎☁︎☁︎☁︎☁︎☁︎☁︎☁︎☁︎☁︎☁︎☁︎☁︎☁︎
"That was absolutely amazing!" My cheeks are pink and my hair is extremely tousled as Finn and I walk away from the stables. Both of us are smiling wildly, and I notice that Finn's pupils are dilated.
"Was it worthy of all the money you payed?" He drags his feet in the dry dirt.
"Definitely. That is priceless."
"Does this mean that you'll be coming back again?" He sounds hopeful, and the grin falls from my face.
"We don't have the money. I'm sorry." I explain, and his happy expression never wavers.
He scoffs. "Don't worry about that. We will work something out. You should come back whenever you feel like it."
"I won't be allowed in without money, I wouldn't do that to your mom!" I protest, looking longingly back at the stables.
"I don't care about the money, Charlotte. I will sneak you in, and then we can eat pudding in my tree fort!" He raises his fist like superman, and I giggle.
"Only if you have Chocolate."
