Third Person POV

Alice scanned and scanned her mind, hoping to find any glimpse of where Edward had gone.

The Cullen Clan were gathered in the living room of their Seattle home wondering the possible places Edward could have vanished to.

Suddenly a bright, vivid image appeared in Alice's vision. Could that be...?

"I know where Edward went," she spoke softly with certainty.

Carlisle stopped pacing. Esme stopped sobbing. Emmet stopped yelling. Rosalie stopped screeching. In a flash, Jasper was at Alice's side and placed a gentle hand on her shoulder.

"Where did he go my love?" he said in his Texan drawl.

"He thinks Bella's dead," she began.

"Isn't she?" spoke Rosalie as she lifted off the couch and made her way towards Alice.

"I can't be sure but, he doesn't want to live without her. He wants to die too."

A gasp from Esme echoed throughout the room as the others stood in shock.

"My son!" Esme cried as Carlisle held her, "My darling boy!"

"Is it too late?" Rose asked with sadness, "is he gone?"

"He's gone to Italy, to the Volturi to ask for his death."

*****************************

The airplane swayed and shook in the turbulence, but it didn't effect Edward's rigid posture. He sat looking out the window over Italy as the plane began its decent, and the seatbelt light flashed above his head. But he couldn't move. He couldn't speak. His throat was dry and burned like wildfire despite his hunt earlier that day. How could the one thing he was living for vanish like that? Nothing could mend him now, for he was truly and utterly broken.

He didn't show any sign of life as he made his way off the plane, nor when he exited the airport. The only proper words he could mumble was the address of his destination to the taxi driver,

"Volterra please."

*****************************

It had now been three months since Bella had arrived at Volterra. The small brunette wiped away the last of the dirt of the now polished marble floor of the castle and sighed with satisfaction. Bella's work was completed for the day – earlier than expected – and she was glad. The past few months living under the Volturi's rule had been hell. Literally. They had exhausted her beyond repair, and she was filthy. Apparently, they didn't believe in allowing slaves to bathe, despite the filth and dirt that covered them.

She quickly gathered up the cleaning supplies in her small arms and carried them to the cleaning room. Lack of food and exhaustion had left her skinny, weak and fragile, but she was determined. Bella rarely misbehaved and completed her work almost all of the time.

She was overjoyed to finally have a break having finished early, and she almost skipped to the guards to be excused for the day.

"Not so fast young lady," one of the guards sneered, "you're needed in the throne room. We have a visitor." The vampire flashed his white teeth menacingly. Suddenly, Bella felt as if she was going to throw up. The one time she actually had some time off, she was forced to give it up to serve a visitor. She had already served a handful of vampires during her stay, and to say that she was scarred from those experiences was an understatement. She absentmindedly pulled at the hem of her dress in disappointment, and reluctantly nodded her head as she was escorted down the hall towards the throne room by two pale men.
