I wake up to the strong aroma of french toast and bacon. I hop out of bed and run to see Kezzin in the kitchen and talking on the phone. I run to him and hug him so hard he burps. We both laugh and Kezzin tells the person on the phone he'll call him back. I smile once he hangs up the phone.
"HEYYY LIL SIS!" He kisses my forehead and hugs me tightly. "How have you been?"
"Just here chilling in your empty apartment." I laugh. "Hows work?"
"It tough. I'm expected to present in front of thai and south african investors. I have to pitch the new idea of a cellular network that connects across the continents without paying extra. But the catch is that money won't profit and start if they don't deposit some toward this idea. We often make people pay before a service is free. Like a monthly payment start."
"Well pitch it good because no one wants to pay for international service." I laugh.
"I made you some french toast, eggs and bacon. Coffee is brewing and we can sit and eat before I run off lil sis." He scrambles the eggs just the way I like them.
"Thanks big bro." I smile and pour myself a cup of coffee. "It smells great."
We sit and start eating. I drizzle my french toast in syrup and start chowing down. The food is magical. Kezzin has always been a good cook. We eat in silence until Kezzin jumps up as if he's forgotten something. He digs in his pocket and hands me a blue piece of paper.
"Hey I forgot to tell you. This hazel eyed girl with an afro gave this to me. She said she knew you and would like you to come to this gay rights event to help the community and something about helping your college get over their fear."
"Azula." I state. How does she know Kezzin knows me? I hope she doesn't think he's my boyfriend. Wait, but if she did, then why would she invite me to this gay rights event? Does she think I'm gay.
"It starts at 11."
"Thanks Kezzin." I take flyer and read it, learning it's through invite only. I feel my stomach churn and I smile from nervousness. She wants me there.
"Um, I'm guessing this Azula girl has a special place in your mind?"
"Uhhhh, whattt? What you chatting about Kez?" I laugh nervously and he squints his eyes at me and smiles.
"Yeah right, you got a thing for her." His face returns to normal as his iphone rings. He answers it.
"Hey... oh damn... man we have to fix that chart immediately... ok I'll be there in a few. Ok, bye." He hangs up.
"Sorry hun but I gotta run. Kate said the presentation is jumping due to the different use of software. Thank God I took that trade class in computers." He kisses my forehead and run to the living room to pack his bag. I sit at the table and smile as I read over the flier. She wants me there.
I take a shower and through on a pair of cut up jeans and a white tshirt. I put on a small line of eyeliner and apply some coats of mascara. I'm pretty but I hold regular black eyes, medium nose and meduim lips. Everything is plain. I place some concealer under my eyes to cover the small bags I earned from staying up and watching comedy movies. I place my medium length dreads into a ponytail. I was trying my best to look naturally and effortless so Azula would find me cool and laid back even though I was a closested lesbian who is nervous of what people had to say about her.
I grab my keys, my phone and my wallet and head out the door. I reread the flier as I lock the door and run down the steps. It's somewhere around Essex street so I decide I'm going to catch the f train when I realize a see a familar car in front of my house. 'Acadia? What the hell is she doing here?' I think. I run up to her car and scare her shitless. She jumps then smiles. She has her hair out and she's wearing a tank top with sweats. Then I realize she has a large heart tattoo on her shoulder. The heart has rainbow wings and a name is inscribed in the wings.
