Max threw on his coat; the fur around the hood tickled his nose as he smiled. He turned around "Dad, I'm going to go get some more fire wood." He yelled "I'll be back soon." He quickly zipped up his coat and opened the door. He heard his father yell back "Okay! Be back before dinner. Rabbit stew again." Max stepped outside, his boots crunching in the snow. He glanced up, knowing it would be getting dark soon. He quickly started to jog to the wood chopping area, keeping his gloved hands tucked deep inside his pockets.
Once he arrived, he shook the snow off of the cover, where the logs laid. He quickly picked up a few logs and placed them on the tree stump, picking up the ax that was lying against it. He lifted the ax above his head and swung down. The ax split the log in two, some of the wood splintering around the cracked area. He quickly moved those off to the side, placing another log on the stump. He was about to swing where there was a loud clack and a cry of distress echoed into the air. Max stopped, turning to the source of the sound. He gripped the ax tighter as he walked towards the noise. The bear traps his father and him placed must have trapped something. He quickly and quietly walked over to the trap and frowned.
An extremely thin deer had gotten caught, it's leg clamped in the jaws of the bear trap. As he walked over to open the trap, he noticed something, something off. He backed up, gripping the ax tighter and walked around the side of the creature. He noticed pale, light blue grey skin and protruding ribs from underneath the discolored skin. His eyes widened as he saw messy black locks lying in the snow. He panicked, a wendigo...he was looking at a wendigo. His eyes widened out of fear, dropping the ax, as he backed away, the snow still crunching. He took a step back and stepped on a branch, causing the brittle wood to snap. The wendigo's head shot up as its long pointed ears tried to locate the cause of the sound. Max held his breath, fear taking ahold of him. He was frozen in place as the creature slowly sat up, its head scanning the area.
Max didn't move and he didn't breath as the creatures head spun and faced him, its glossy, unnaturally frosted eyes looked at him. Max locked eyes with the creature, his wiry long black hair covering its face. Max turned, about to run when a quiet, rough voice called "Help...please...need help..." Max quickly turned back to the creature "W-What?" He stuttered, his voice shaky. The creature spoken again "Need help...please help." Max looked at it and down to its leg. He sighed shakily "I'll h-help...but, on one condition." He said, his voice growing more confident. The wendigo tilted its head, almost as if curious. Max spoke again "You cannot harm me, as I am going to free you, okay?" The creature's face lit up into a grin, it's sharp teeth exposed.
The grin worried Max as he carefully walked over to the bear trap, watching the wendigo's every move. All the wendigo did was watch him carefully, almost as if it was just as worried. He quickly grabbed the side of the bear trap and pulled the sides down, they re-latched to the hooks. He quickly backed up as the wendigo moved its leg from the trap, careful not to set it off again. Max quickly stood up and stepped back as the wendigo got up onto its legs, carefully limping as it walked over to Max. Max panicked, stepping back "H-Hey! We a-agreed!" He yelled.
The wendigo carefully leaned down and pressed its face against Max's, a quiet, rough purr echoing from its throat. Max was surprised to feel how warm the wendigo was. He gently moved some of the wiry hair to the side and smiled. The wendigo quickly bounded away, its hooved feet silent in the snow. Max watched it leave before quickly picking up the ax and running back to the house "Dad!" He yelled into the house "DAD!" He yelled again. His father came out of his bedroom "What? What happened Max?" he asked, worry filling his voice. Max quickly turned around "Dad! You will NEVER believe what I just saw and saved!" He said, his eyes sparkling with excitement.
