WILL

Emily and I squished in the back of Amandas tiny car. Zoe rode shotgun and Amanda drove.

While we were on our way to Zoes house Emily continued to read Amandas file.

"After many unsuccessful tries the Shamans finally managed to inplant the Hailak. Then there's some that isn't in code." She passed the folder to Zoe.

"It's in Mesopotamian. It must be the spell they used. I can work with this."

Finally we reached Zoes house. She led us down to the basement.

It was pretty cool down there.

The walls were covered with bookshelves crammed with books. There was a pentagram in the centre of the room and in the corner next to the door were some beanbags and cushions, a fridge and several cupboards marked 'Ingredients'. I walked to the nearest shelf and pulled out a book.

"Modern Demonology in England and Wales."

Were there different demons in Scotland and Ireland?

Flicking through, I realised the book was illustrated.

Before I could start reading I heard Emily shout from the far corner.

Glancing over I saw her sat on the floor, surrounded with towering stacks of books.

"Hey Amanda! I found your demon."

Amanda walked over and Emily pointed something out in the book she was holding.

"Oh my god! Guys, I have super strength and I can turn invisible!"

I smiled.

I walked over to Zoe and crouched down next to her.

"Got anything?" I asked.

She was holding a book in one hand and scribbling on some paper in the other, and Amanda's file was open in front of her.

"Almost."

She turned around and smiled at me.

I hadn't known Zoe for very long, but it felt like it had been years. When she smiled at me it made me want to smile back, and tell her how I feel.

I'm not sure how exactly it is that I feel.

Some people might call it love, but that seems like too small a word for what I'm feeling.

Could I tell her? Now?

I was seriously considering telling her when she dropped the chewed biro she had been writing with and stood up.

"I've got it! I need 6 candles, preferably black, and one of those big ceramic jugs to hold the demon. Amanda, please stay calm. I need you to stand in the middle of the pentagram. Don't worry, it'll work, I promise you. Will, Em, I need you to stand around the edge of the pentagram."

When everyone was in their places Zoe put two lit candles either side of Amanda, two either side of the jug and two either side of her. She was the third corner of the triangle around Amanda.

I glanced around the room and realised that the fridge and all the electric lights had vanished.

Zoe started to speak, but it was nothing I could understand. All I know is that it made the air around me vibrate with power.

I breathed in.

Here goes nothing.
