Dana held up the flowing fabrics surrounding her feet. The long slit in her dress revealed her jewelled, black stilettos as she stepped carefully over the lifeless body in front of her. She avoided the shards of wine glass, now shattered on the floor. Then, just as she had her previous victim, she softly planted a short kiss on William's forehead, leaving a bright red lip print where her kiss had found its mark.
"I'm sorry, William. You didn't deserve this." She whispered, and surprisingly, she truly meant it.
Dana left the now pale, cold body on the ground and exited the room softly, with one small glance behind her. Then she slipped downstairs without her sudden disappearance ever being noticed. She wondered how long it would take before he was found, cold and lifeless, in the upstairs study. She was a little nervous, yes she, the great and perfect Dana Lorington, but she had gone through this all before, and no one had even suspected her of anything.
'How incompetent our detectives and officers are today.' Muttered Dana under her breath 'Why, I'm certain if Sherlock Holmes had been here, I would have already been cornered.' she smiled a little at that thought.
The remainder of the evening, Dana danced, drank, and dabbled in lighthearted conversation as if nothing unusual had happened at all. To everyone else at the party, she appeared carefree, happy, innocent. But inwardly, Dana was trying to push through her flooding emotions. Guilt, sadness and shame seemed to swallow her and tear at her from the inside. Much as she hated to admit it, and much as she told herself otherwise, she had always loved William in her own, confused way. He had always been good to her and he was always there. Most importantly, he always knew how to make her laugh.
'No, Dana. Don't do this to yourself now. He was never of any interest to you. He was only a form of amusement. You never felt anything for him, and if you loved him at all, it was only because of the benefit he provided to yourself.' She reprimanded herself inwardly.
Suspense rose agonizingly throughout the night as Dana awaited the chaos soon to follow. Despite her pangs of guilt, she was smug, knowing she wouldn't get caught for her heinous Deed. She couldn't. Could she?
