"Sam! We need to light the fire!" a voice from downstairs called, causing the mentioned blond boy to roll his eyes and stand up and make his way to the living room.

"You couldn't have used a lighter instead of letting me rest? I just graduated." Sam asked, looking at his father, who was the one who had called him.

The man shook his head. "You know we don't own any lighters. Why would we? Now light it. You belong to me."

Sam took a deep breath before pointing his hand at the fireplace, focusing a beam of light on the logs, starting a small flame before intensifying the beam, letting the fire spread to the other logs.

"Good job son." Sam's father patted him on the back before pushing him out of the room.

Rolling his eyes, Sam went to go upstairs, but his mother decided to stop him as he went to go up the stairs.

"Sam!" she exclaimed before forcing him to stop. "Tonight is your sister's birthday party, and I need you to fill these jars with light." She gestured to at least 50 mason jars.

Sam nodded before grabbing one of the boxes and turning to walk upstairs before his mother's voice stopped him. "By the way, we'll be going out for dinner, but we can only take five people."

Sam frowned. "But there are 5 of us." He said, placing the first box on the top of the stairs before walking back down the grab the second.

"Well, your sister wants to bring a friend to the restaurant, and she's the birthday girl." The woman looked down slightly, as if afraid to look into her son's eyes.

"So someone's staying home?" Sam asked to which his mother nodded. "And let me guess, that someone is me?" Again, the woman nodded and Sam nodded back, saying he understood before starting up the stairs with the other box.

"I'll have your fairy jars ready in about an hour, maybe a little less." He called, hoping his voice didn't crack as he hurried into his bedroom before the tears could fall.

Tears finally escaped as the blue-eyed boy sat down at his rickety old desk, placing the box on top of it. He took one of the jars out and while shaking, created a light and sealed it inside by twisting the cap tightly.

Placing it to the side, Sam continued this process with all 50 of the jars before he gathered them all up and started downstairs, acting like nothing bothered him.

"Ah, Sam. Finally done I see." The blond's father said, forcing an obviously fake smile at the boy. Sam fake smiled back as his sister came down with her coat on and another brunette next to her.

"See ya later Sam!" His sister called before rushing out the door with her friend before Sam could respond.

A minute later, Sam's brother did the same, only completely ignoring the blond, slightly shaking boy.

Finally, Sam's mother and father were ready, starting out the door as they yelled things that needed to be done.

"Don't destroy the house!" Sam's father yelled before closing the door, shutting Sam in with just his thoughts and a little bit of light.

Sam nodded, although there was no one to see him. He shook his head and sighed before turning around and starting up the stairs to his room, still shaking slightly.

Sam opened his window as soon as he reached his room, looking into the driveway and seeing that his family hadn't left yet and were instead standing around the car.

"Your brother is weird, no wonder you didn't want him coming out with you guys." Sam heard his sister's friend say.

The blond's sister merely shrugged. "He saves us a ton of money with heating and electricity bills, so Ben and I get more presents and more allowance." Sam's eyes started watering for the second time that day.

"If I'm entirely honest, the only reason he is still around is because he saves us money. If he didn't, he wouldn't be here. I would've given him up for adoption 18 years ago." Sam's father laughed, finally unlocking the door to let everyone in.

"I wish I had a normal brother." Sam's brother said, causing the blond to finally release the sobs as his family finally drove away, Ben's words hanging in the air, suffocating Sam in the hatred found hidden beneath the words.

After allowing himself to cry for about 30 minutes, Sam finally stood up, making a final decision. He looked through his desk, finding his wallet, filled with the money he had been saving since third grade, specifically for this reason.

Taking out his phone, Sam opened the messages app and searched for the name of a friend from social medias.

To: Uncle LT

Hey Elton? Is there any way that I could spend some time at your place until I get onto my own two feet?

From: Uncle LT

Sure. You can stay as long as you'd like

Don't you live in Kansas? Isn't LA a little far away?

To: Uncle LT

Yeah, but I'll explain when I get there. See you in a day or so.

Sam smiled. "It's finally happening." he whispered to himself happily, grabbing his backpack and stuffing a few clothing choices and his charger into it before heading downstairs.

He threw his shoes and sweatshirt on before stuffing his wallet and phone into his pocket, walking out of the door, starting the long journey to LA to find something.

What that something was? Well, he would figure that out eventually.

For now, it was just him against the world.
