dear michael,
i miss squeezing through the obnoxiously crowded hallway together, laughing
sincerely,
sophie
sophie thought about her last day with michael often. it was permentanly stuck in her brain, most likely not leaving anytime soon.
"sophie?" michael said in a serious tone as they were at their lockers, getting ready to leave for summer vacation. they were alway the last in the halls because, well, they didn't really know, they just always were. "yeah?" sophie replied looking up at him. he was a good two feet taller than her, sometimes it was a good thing, sometimes not.
"i need to tell you something." he stated in the tone once again. sophie looked at him once again and michael took that as a signal to continue.
"i love you, sophie."
sophie didn't know what to say. the boy she had known forever as bestest friends, just confessed his love for her. so she said the first thing that came to her mind, what she thought she felt at the moment.
"michael i don't love you. i feel nothing. none. i'm sorry i have to go."
sophie rushed off, quickly regretting what she said. she didn't mean to say it in that context, but it was too late to go back and fix it because it was now summer and she wouldn't have to see michael for three and a half months. by then it'd blow over; she hoped.
while sophie was hurrying away in embarrassment, she vowed to not talk to michael all summer, letting him get over his emotions and then it would all be over. but nothing is always that easy.
sophie still regretted what she said. if she could go back, she would tell michael she loved him too, but in a best friend context. thing would have probably gone smoother and they wouldn't be in this position right now. if sophie had said the right thing, the would be here in sophie's room or michael's room giggling about who knows what. they would be having the best summer going to amusement parks and the zoo like they used too.
while she thought she was the one who fucked up, michael thought the same; tearing his brain apart twenty-four-seven trying to figure out a way to fix it.
