CHAPTER 4

Evening shifts are the bane of her existence as well as doubles. After two months into working at the cafe, she gets most of the shifts in that she is not complaining. It gave her the ability to fix her broken AC and the leaky faucet in her kitchen so that was nice.

"Hey, Leah." Emily waving to her new friend after not having many, to begin with. She starts yet another full day of work, not looking forward to working twelve hours, but thankful she has a job.

"Hey! I wasn't sure if I was working with you or Shawn today!" Leah confessed.

"You know you can check the schedule, right?" Emily questioned, quietly chuckling in the process.

"I know... I know." Leah exhaled. "I was just being lazy, don't judge me." she says as she throws a wadded up napkin at Emily, laughing while doing so.

Picking up the napkin Emily throws it in the trash pointing at Leah. "Oh, I am so judging. Feel all of the judge." She barks out another laugh, turning to walk to the back room. "Hold on, I have to put my stuff in my cubby. I will be back."

Stuffing her oversized bag into a small square hole that is suppose to be big enough to hold all of their belongings. Done stuffing and satisfied that the deep red purse is wedged in there real nice, she walks back up the front. Mid-stride past the office she hears a rustle of clothing from behind the closed door of the office. Observing closer she finds the light seems to be off, in fact. Curiosity gets the better of her and she decides to investigate the strange noise,  unsure if there is someone inside or not.

Reaching for the silver doorknob with one hand while the other hand is touching her necklace. Anticipation building mere moments away from solving this small mystery. A shaky hand turns and jerks the door wide open.

Garett, with a hand zipping up his pants and he is reaching for his phone that dropped when he jumped, his motions hurried.

Eye contact is made. Neither says a word. The silence hangs in the air. Confusion written upon her face as she takes in the disheveled appearance of her manager, who was just caught sitting in the dark doing god knows what.

Staring at him for what felt like five minutes, she tears her eyes away, not saying a word. She has great difficulty  with moving her limbs to carry her back to the front.

Emerging from the back of the store, "Hey, yeah..." she sputters, coming to stand next to the other employee. She doesn't quite look at Leah while contemplating her next statement. "What do you think of Garrett?"

A pregnant pause passes before she receives an answer to her question. "Oh, well I guess he is sort of nice in an, 'I will joke around with you but I can still fire you on the spot', kind of way. Seems alright I guess. I've never paid much attention, to be honest." Finally taking notice of the blank stare that rests on Emily's face. Looking back and forth, trying to see what she is staring at, Leah continues "Why do you ask?"

Fidgeting with her neckless, staring out the window to avoid looking at any of the customers she says, "No reason at all. Just wondering. Trying to know more about my coworkers..." Emily lets out a forced chuckle. 'Maybe I am  things? I could have sworn I saw him zipping up his pants.' "Any who, I am going to make myself a coffee. Want anything?" Emily asks, moving away from the counter quickly diffusing any unwanted tension.
