"last one to the door is a rotten egg!" david yells as soon as alexis unlocks the door to her apartment complex.
"david, stop! thats so unfair," alexis yells back as he got a head start up the 4 flights of stairs to her door. she sprints as fast as she can up the stairs.
"sucks to suck, allie!" alexis hears david from the fourth floor. she makes her way up the last flight to find that david already invited himself in her apartment, since he has a key. alexis takes her shoes off at the door, placing them next to davids. she went into the laundry room and changed into an oversized hoodie and pajama shorts.
"i'm about to take that key back." alexis says coming out of the laundry room and grabbing her water bottle from the counter.
"you would never," david scoffs popping his head out from the fridge.
"oh, but i would." she says plopping down on the couch.
"take it back." david said making his way over to stand directly above alexis in an attempt to intimidate her.
"nope," she smirks. as a result, he pushes alexis down so she'slying flat on the couch and pins her arms above her head, straddling her body. alexis lets out a scream from the sudden movement, laughing at the situation. "david, stop!"
"nope. not until you take it back." he crosses his arms.
"oh, you want me to take it back?" alexis asks, reaching for the key in his pocket.
"not like that!" david pins her arms above her head again. he leans closer to her face and said in a low voice, "say you'll never take your key back."
alexis's breath hitched at the proximity of his face to hers. "okay, okay. you can keep it forever," she says in a quiet tone, not making eye contact, trying not to make it obvious that she could barely function with him this close to her, in this position. david noticed the change in her mood.
"you okay?" david asks getting off of alexis to sit criss cross in front of her.
"yeah," she breathed out. alexis mimicked his actions and sat the same way facing him.
"hey, look at me," he lifts her face, forcing her to look at him. "what's up?" he asks with concerned eyes as he pushes her hair behind her ear. his eyes darted across her face looking for any emotion.
"it's nothing, lets just watch a movie or something." alexis says avoiding the topic, since she's not about to tell him how she feels. she gets up to grab the ps3 controller of the tv stand.
"no, allie. what's wrong? you've been like this for the past couple weeks." david says taking the controller from my hands when she sat back down.
"i don't know. i think i've just been missing home lately." alexis says leaning her head on his shoulder to avoid eye contact without being obvious.
david rests his hand closest to her on her outer thigh and pulls her closer to his body. "you wanna know what i do to get over homesickness?"
"hmm?"
"i think of you."
"why?" alexis asks raising her head to look at him.
"because you're my home away from home. whenever i'm with you, i always feel at home. even in the big city of la, you make me feel like we're back in vernon hills. no matter how stressed i am or however my day is going, i know i can always call you or come over and i can be myself. and relax. time slows down when you're around." david looks down at alexis with a cheesy smile. "that's why you're my best friend."
"oh." so after all that, she's still only his best friend. "i never would've thought that." alexis says resting her head back on his shoulder and curled her legs into her chest while snuggling into david's side.
david lets out a sigh, and starts tracing shapes into the side of her thigh with his fingers. he begins scrolling through the channels on the tv. he stops and puts on a station playing reruns of grey's anatomy.
the soft sounds from the tv mixed with david's calm heartbeat and his hand tracing figures on her leg, alexis's eyes become heavy as shes go in and out of sleep.

delainey came home to see both david and alexis asleep on the couch. she laughed to herself and walked over to them.
"dave. dave." she said slightly pushing at his shoulder to wake him up. david jerked awake, but not enough to wake up alexis.
"oh, shit what time is it?" david asked running his fingers through his messy hair.
"it was 1:40 last time i checked." delainey answered.
"i'm gonna bring her to bed, i'll be back," david said picking alexis up. the sudden movement woke her. "shh, go back to sleep." david whispered as the clung onto his neck.
david places alexis on her bed and places the covers over her. he begins to walk out of the room but stops when he hears alexis's tired voice. "where are you going?"
"i'll be right back, go back to sleep." he says quietly.
david walks into the living room. "i'm just gonna go to bed," he tells delainey before heading back to alexis's room.
"goodnight, dave!"
"goodnight, laine!"
david changes into sweatpants. he keeps a couple shirts and pants in alexis's dresser for these types of nights.
five minutes later, alexis feels the other side of the bed dips down.
"come here," he lays down, and she slides over to him, resting her head in the crook of his neck. alexis bends her top leg so its resting over david's thighs and rests her arm across his chest. he lets out a breathy laugh, "who's the cuddly one now?"
"goodnight," alexis mumbles into his neck. alexis finally fall asleep again to david's heartbeat and fingers running through her hair.
"goodnight, love" david whispers before drifting into sleep.
—-—AN: this is how i imagine alexis's apartment, except the office is delainey's bedroom. and instead of a loveseat, its an L shaped couch againts the windows. the color scheme would be greys, whites, blacks, with hints of pastel yellows.
