Because he felt nothing

The air held tension with a strange hint of uncertainty coming from both parties. It created a unique flavor that wafted through the room...cave...castle? There really wasn't a proper name for the structure. It was carved into the upper of a mountain surrounded by miles upon miles of forestry. The entrance looked like the opening of a cave but the moment you stepped inside you were greeted with absolute art. The interior was reminiscent of a victorian style castle. What it lacked in furniture- of which there was none- it made up for with extremely intricate wall carvings all around as well as piles of valuable, beautiful rocks strewn carelessly about in random piles. The ceiling was high by human standards and various stalactites and stalagmites- assumably naturally formed- littered the area.

There was a loud grunting sound followed by a low toned hiss. The seven occupants of the room collectively fixed their eyes on the origin of the sound. Five pairs of human eyes and two pairs of dragon eyes stared with anticipation at the scaly beast slithering in the shadows of a closet like room that looked barely large enough to contain it.

The two dragons; Leviathan, with royal purplish red scales and intense fiery eyes and Cerulean, with royal blue scales and soft but luminous eyes like the sun had brought the human family there out of pity. The sudden tsunami that rolled in next to where they had decided to set up camp would've definitely overpowered and killed them. That, of course, wasn't new to either dragon. Many times they had seen humans in fatal situations in the forest that surrounded their home and usually they'd fly by offering only silent prayers to Titania but the combination of two young children plus a woman with child had pulled too hard on Cerulean's heart strings. Originally, the dragons had intended to fly them home but the mother had informed them that their home was miles away in an area that didn't allow dragons and would immediately attempt to shoot them out of the sky. The closest the dragons could go without being spotted by the guards was already chin deep in ocean water. Their village was safe only because of the high cement walls that surrounded them. This left Cerulean and Leviathan with no other choice but to take the family to their own home in the mountain.

"Do as you wish." The intimidating voice of the pitch black wyvern said before closing his eyes dismissively and folding himself within the shadows, blending in perfectly with the darkness.

The other two dragons looked visibly relieved as they swiftly ushered the family away. Once there was a bit of distance away from the Wyvern the mother spoke.

"Well, that was... nerve wracking." she said in a sing song voice, replacing the heavy silence that had swallowed them as they walked the halls.

"Be very grateful he said yes." Cerulean said. "Titania knows what would've happened if his spirits were not so high."

"Odds are you would've been his next meal." Leviathan responded matter-of-factly.

The mother, with a broad smile plastered on her face, laughed nervously as she patted the heads of the twin girls who had paled at the dragon's words.

More silence passed before the father broke it. "So is he your father? Leader? The eldest? The alpha?" He asked in a obvious attempt the escape the uncomfortable silence. His question making his lack of knowledge of their species all too apparent.

Cerulean gave him a strange look before explaining as they descended a long set of stairs. "Dragons who stay dragons- meaning those that don't live in their human forms- are usually the solitary type and prefer to live alone in structures like these made long ago by the humans who worshipped us. Most don't even go out to seek a mate, instead choosing absolute solitude to let their family line end with them. That's the type of dragon Asmodi is...was?... no; is. Long ago our mother, his sister who chose to stay in human form and raise a family, died and our father vanished. So he decided to extend his kindness to us by allowing us to live in his mountain."
