I had just finished arranging the flowers in the shop, it looked like a cold evening outside, so I threw on my coat and went to remove the flowers from outside the front of the shop. The florists now looked duller, as the bright bursts of colours were all wrapped up and ready for the next day. I walked outside and felt a unusual chill in the air. I'm sure it's nothing, Amber you're being silly, I thought to myself.
As I was wrapping the flowers outside I heard a sudden noise. It sounded like a gunshot, although I was sure it was just a car backfiring. This is a good neighbourhood, nothing could ever happen to me here. I packed the last of the flowers into a box and brought them back inside, all the other stores around us were closing too and it was evident that they were all tired. I smiled at a lady who runs a coffee shop across the road as she looked at me through the window, she gave me a tired smile back. Hani, my boss, came back through from the back room to announce that she was done and ready to leave when I was. Hani is lovely, she's around 55 or so, she's never told me her real age, perhaps because I am a lot younger than her. Seconds later, her phone started to ring and she excused herself from the room. With everything locked and the flowers watered and ready for tomorrow, I sat and waited for Hani to finish on the phone so we could go home. As I heard her talking I cursed at myself for still not knowing much Korean, even if I have been here 18 years. I know how to read basic signs and give free rings and have real basic conversations with people, but that's around it. I made a mental note to myself to go on a course or get a tutor to help me learn Korean. Besides, it's not as if I'm leaving anytime soon, I am not leaving my father's memory behind.
As Hani was on the phone I started to wander off into a daydream, thinking about how much better off I would be going back to England, although I was one years old when I was last there, so I wouldn't know where to go. I know I am okay here in Seoul though, I have learned to love it throughout my time here and I wouldn't really imagine myself anywhere else. Plus I haven't got the qualifications to go anywhere else, I was incredibly lucky that Hani gave me this job. Hani walked back in with a look of frustration on her face, it seemed as if someone has really pissed her off.
"Let's go before I rip these flowers to pieces" she stated, as she unlocked the door and turned off the light. I didn't want to further annoy her so I followed her straight away, closely behind her as she shut and locked the door to the shop. "I'm sorry about that, my son has been stranded in China, I'm not really sure what to do" she paused for a second. "But go home my love, don't worry about me, I just needed to tell someone, good night and I will see you in the morning" she calmly said. I felt bad for her, she was so loving and needed someone to love her back, but her children live thousands of miles away for work or college. I really loved her, so I guess I was all she had at this point. I hugged her goodbye and watched as she got into her car and left. I was about to embark on my journey home when three men came running round the corner and ran straight into me. I fell backwards with high force.
"You should watch where you're going, bitch" one of them rudely stated, while I tried to get up but ended up falling back down to groan in pain. Pain shot up my back and ribs as the force of the ground and the force of the man hit me from both angles. It hurt like hell. They just stood there while I was grunting in pain on the floor.
"I'm sorry" I weakly apologised as I didn't want to cause further trouble. That was when I could get a good look at them. They looked like businessmen, with all black suits and white ties and shined leather black shoes. But they way they held themselves said something other than business. They held themselves high, backs straight, shoulders up and chins up. They screamed military, but the way they all looked the same, bulky and muscly displayed something dodgy, something like a mafia or something. I got up and looked at their faces properly, one of them scowled at me before I pulled my head down to show respect and then took one step to walk away.
