The Bully - Chapter 7

Today wasn't a very sunny day for the S.S. Friendship, for some of the crew, especially for Hatty, but not for Ferrin. She woke up to overcast skies, but beautiful waves. Ferrin actually liked overcast days. She didn't mind them too much. Not even the rain and a thunderstorm could bother her. She tried to cheer up the other crew members and it worked! Except for one crew member. His name was Nigel. He was Rigel's older brother. Nigel wasn't usually a very happy person. He was pessimistic about most situations and sarcastic about everything. As Ferrin told a joke and the other crew members laughed at it, Nigel just scoffed and said, "Oh come on, guys! The joke wasn't even that funny!" Ferrin and the other crew members stopped laughing, and turned to look at Nigel. "What are you trying to say?" Mom asked, she was a bit surprised at what Nigel said. "Ferrin's joke is so boring!" Nigel said. Ferrin stood still. She felt hurt by what Nigel said. Mom looked at Nigel with a shocked expression on her face. "Nigel!! How dare you say that about Ferrin!" Mom yelled, angry at Nigel. Ferrin didn't move. She didn't know how to take criticism, so she got hurt easily by comments like what Nigel said. Ferrin felt really embarrassed, she didn't want her friends to hear what Nigel said, but she knew they heard. "What?! I'm just saying my thoughts!" Nigel said. Mom and the rest of the crew members glared angrily at Nigel. "Just be quiet, Nigel!" Mom said. Nigel scoffed. Ferrin just stood there, staring at Nigel, in pure silence. "Was my joke really that bad...?" She thought. Mom walked up to Ferrin and said, "Don't listen to him Ferrin, your joke was amazing!" Ferrin felt comforted by what Mom said and smiled. But unfortunately, that wasn't the end of it. While Ferrin was walking by Nigel later, he stuck his foot out and purposefully tripped Ferrin. She fell face first onto the wooden deck of the S.S Friendship and got hurt. Hatty and Mom witnessed this and Hatty immediately ran to Ferrin's aid. He helped her up. "Ferrin! Are you okay?" Hatty asked in an extremely worried tone. Ferrin looked at Hatty. "M-my... My face hurts.. really bad.." Ferrin said. Hatty looked at Ferrin with a worried expression, he was clearly worried about her. "Come on, let's get you patched up!" Hatty said. He gently took Ferrin by the hand and led her to his cabin. "Here, sit down on my bed, I'll be right back, I'm gonna go get a first aid kit!" Ferrin nodded in agreement. Hatty went to get the first aid kit. Ferrin then wondered why she tripped and fell. Then she remembered how Nigel was nearby when she tripped. "Maybe Nigel... did it?" Ferrin thought. "It couldn't have been a loose plank, someone would've tripped over it already!" She said in her thoughts. It wasn't too long before Hatty came back with the first aid kit. He got out some bandages, and some disinfectant. "Alright, first, we gotta disinfect the wound, and it's going to hurt really bad, so prepare yourself!" Ferrin mentally prepared herself. Hatty put some of the disinfectant on a clean washcloth and gently put it on the scrape on Ferrin's face. Ferrin grimaced in pain, and gripped her leg. Hatty looked at Ferrin and felt sorry for her. After the pain finally subsided, Hatty congratulated Ferrin for staying strong. He then gently bandaged Ferrin's wound. She blushed and thanked him. "Oh, it's no problem!" Hatty said with a smile. Then he remembered something. "Wait, what made you trip and fall out there?" He asked Ferrin. Ferrin then remembered what she thought about earlier. "I'm not trying to be a tattletale, but I think it was Nigel!" She said. Hatty was surprised and a little shocked at what Ferrin said. "What? Are you sure?" He replied. "Yeah? I think so!" Ferrin said, sweating a little nervously. "Okay, just to make sure, we're gonna go talk to Nigel!" "Alright!" Ferrin agreed. She got up and walked with Hatty to find Nigel. When they found him, Hatty asked him in a serious tone, "Nigel, is it true that you tripped Ferrin?" Nigel looked at Hatty and said, "What?! No! Now why would I wanna trip Ferrin?" Ferrin's eyes widened, she couldn't believe what Nigel said. "WHAT!?" She yelled in disbelief. "N-no! You're lying!" Ferrin instantly looked at Hatty. "Hatty don't believe Nigel! He's lying! I couldn't have tripped over anything else!" Hatty looked at Ferrin, and thought about what she said. He then looked at the spot where Ferrin originally tripped, and looked back at her. "Nigel! Don't you ever lie to me! You tripped Ferrin!" Ferrin felt glad that Hatty stood up for her. She even blushed a little. After Hatty scolded Nigel for tripping Ferrin, he turned to her and apologized to her for Nigel's behavior. Ferrin said that it was okay and Hatty took her for some hot chocolate.

Later, when Ferrin was hanging out with Hatty, he stopped looking at the ocean and turned to look at Ferrin. She wasn't even looking at him. She was just staring off into space. Hatty felt a little concerned and gently tried to grab her attention. She didn't say anything. Hatty tried again, no answer. Hatty couldn't stand it anymore. He gently touched Ferrin's shoulder and said her name a little louder. "Ferrin?" She finally snapped out of her state and looked at Hatty. "Oh... What is it, Hatty..?" She asked, clearly in a sad state. Hatty noticed this and felt more concern for Ferrin. "Ferrin are you okay?" He asked her. Ferrin couldn't tell Hatty what was wrong, because she secretly feared she would be judged for her feelings. So she ignored Hatty, even though she didn't want to. This worried Hatty more. "Listen Ferrin, I understand if you don't want to tell me what's wrong, but I'll let you know that I'll always be here for you, and whatever's going through your head, I promise you that everything gets better, and if you need a hug, I'll give you one, okay?" Ferrin looked at Hatty. She started crying tears of joy, because no one has ever said something like that to her. She quickly hugged Hatty, and cried into his chest. Hatty was surprised at Ferrin's reaction, he even felt worried for her. He immediately hugged her back, like he promised. Ferrin continued to hug Hatty, she wasn't going to let him go anytime soon. Hatty also continued to hug Ferrin. He wasn't going to let her go until he was sure that she was gonna be okay. They stayed like this for a few minutes, in each other's embrace, not letting the other go. When they finally let each other go, Ferrin looked at Hatty with a red face, due to her crying so much. Hatty carefully wiped Ferrin's tears with compassion. She looked directly into Hatty's beautiful, shiny eyes and asked him, "R-really...?" "Huh?" Hatty asked her, puzzled. Ferrin looked at him again. "Are you really going to always be there for me? Like, d-do you really m-mean it?" Ferrin asked Hatty. He looked directly into her beautiful, blue eyes. "Yes, Ferrin. I do mean it. You deserve it." Ferrin started crying tears of joy again, she can't believe Hatty's saying this to her. She looked away shyly, and covered her face with her hands, due to embarrassment. "But it's true though! You're so funny, kind, and caring, and... You're just a really great person! And I really like you!" Ferrin blushed brightly at those words, and she continued to cry. She removed her hands from her face, and turned to look at Hatty again. "R-really?" "Yes, of course!" Hatty said, smiling at her. Ferrin smiled. She didn't know what to say, so she just stood there, in awkward silence. Hatty felt awkward as well. He also couldn't come up with a thing to say. Ferrin decided to break the silence by saying, "Okay, thanks for saying those really sweet things to me Hatty, but I'm gonna go to my cabin now!" "Oh, it's no problem! You are my friend, after all!" Hatty replied. Ferrin smiled at him and walked away, waving goodbye to him. "Goodbye Ferrin!" Hatty said. "Goodbye Hatty!" Ferrin said. "Remember the things I said!" Hatty reminded Ferrin. "I will!" Ferrin replied. She walked back to her cabin.
